VERMILLION CO., Ind.(WTHI)- A huge arrest in Vermillion County, Indiana, involving money, pornography and a local business.

Police arrested 42-year-old Martin Russell of Clinton, Indiana on Friday. He's accused of taking nearly $1.5 million from White Construction, a Vermillion County based business.

"Nine felony counts of theft in Vermillion Circuit Court. This stems from a 2 week investigation by Indiana State Police detectives, Vermillion county prosecutor's office and the internal revenue service," Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police said.

The probable cause affidavit says between 2005 and 2009, Russell "exerted unauthorized control" over more than $1.4 million dollars belonging to White Construction. Russell worked for the company as a corporate comptroller and accountant for 18 years, overseeing expenditures related to payroll at the company.

The affidavit says Russell purchased clothing, pornographic videos, and intimate items, amounting to almost $300,000 using a company credit card. He's also accused of wiring himself company money and using corporate credit cards to pay personal debts.

White Construction told News 10 via email "The company is working closely with federal and state authorities to assist in the investigation.

On Monday, Russell appeared in a Vermillion County courtroom for his initial probable cause hearing.

Russell is formally facing nine counts of theft with a prison sentence in the 60-year range. His pre-trial date is set for March 24th, 2010.

Russell is being held at the Vermillion County jail on $100,000 bond, with no 10% allowed.

The reason he only got 17 years is because the County
was too cheap to pay for a trial. They offered him a plea deal; for pleading guilty on all counts he gets off with only a mere 17 years compared to the 60 he could have gotten if it went to trial. In turn that saved them tens of thousands of dollars a trial would have cost. Everyone is happy except the Company he stole from and the 'ladies' who helped him spend the money.

17 years is actually a pretty steep sentence for a crime like that.

Maybe the feds will charge with wire or mail fraud and they can tack on some extra time too.

Clinton man gets 17 1/2 years for theft of $1.4 million

Anonymous The Tribune-Star The Tribune-Star Sat Sep 11, 2010, 05:00 AM EDT

NEWPORT A Vermillion County man has received a 171⁄2-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges of felony theft of $1.4 million from his employer.

Martin J. Russell, 42, of Clinton, had faced seven counts of class-C felony theft and two counts of class-D felony theft. He was arrested by Indiana State Police in January following an Internal Revenue Service investigation into the finances of White Construction, Inc. of Clinton.

Russell had been employed as comptroller at the company. He was fired in January prior to his arrest.

A hearing for acceptance of his plea agreement and sentencing began at 9 a.m. Friday at Newport, and continued until about 2:30 p.m. with only a brief lunch break. Vermillion County Judge Bruce Stengel announced the sentencing following hours of testimony.

A probable cause affidavit states that Russell used his position as comptroller to take company money and credit cards for his personal use. He spent nearly $300,000 for clothing, pornographic videos and intimate items allegedly bought online.

Vermillion County Prosecutor Nina Alexander was unavailable for comment after the sentencing.

The company, located between Clinton and Newport near Indiana 63, employs about 130 in Indiana and operates satellite offices in three other states and Canada.

He is a dirty dog, rotten egg, piece of sh*t, nothing but a&& wipe. He thinks of no one but himself. ALL of his family will have to live with this for the rest of their lives. This affects a lot of people besides him. I wish they would lock him up and throw away the key.

If you're referring to the difference between 17 years and 60, I almost see your point. But there's no "one day counts for three" fiction in that. It's simply the result of a plea agreement. The advisory (standard) sentences for each count, which is pretty normal in such agreements, to be honest...

I have a question! His wife who has no visible means of support, since this occurred, has been able to maintain her huge two story home, drive a nice car, continue with her social life, etc. Question: When a person is jailed for a crime does the Government support the wife and Children in a manner in which they are accustomed to while the husband is in jail????
