VIGO CO., Ind.(WTHI)- Vigo County Jail staff were unable to resuscitate an inmate they found unresponsive after being alerted by other inmates being held in the same cell.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department said inmate William Powell, 48, on Monday, was in a physical altercation before being arrested and brought to the jail. He was denied at booking due to the extent of his injuries, and wasn't be allowed until he was treated, and cleared, at a local hospital.

Powell was transported to Regional Hospital, treated and cleared for jail submission.

Upon re-arrival at the jail, Powell was then taken to the medical jail staff for further assessment. He was cleared for further booking but put on sick call, which means he was scheduled to see another doctor Tuesday morning for even further assessment.

Between 2:15 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, jail staff responded to 10 other inmates, located in the same cell as Powell, trying to alert the staff of something wrong.

Upon arriving at the cell and seeing the unresponsive Powell, the staff immediately proceeded with the proper emergency health response. They alerted the paramedics and provided CPR and brought in a defibrillator to try to resuscitate him until the EMTs arrived.
fortunately, neither the paramedics nor the jail staff were able to revive Powell. A Vigo County Deputy Coroner pronounced Powell dead at the scene.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

That's soo sad. You know he definitely had to be suffering. The jail and hospital should have gave him a thorough evaluation before booking him in. Sound's like a lawsuit pending.

From the looks of this man's face (his mug shot is on WTHI's website), he took a good beating to his head. Just wondering if a CT scan had been done at Regional it might have shown a head bleed. He could have died from a hemorrage.

Just maybe some of the blame falls on him. If he lived a better managed life he wouldn't have been seriously drunk and wouldn't have been trying to fight and consequently wouldn't have ended up in jail. From the looks of him this wasn't his first drunken episode.

Once he is in Custody of the Jail he is the Sheriffs responsibility PERIOD...Sounds like the news just said it was a Homicide.

He Died as a result of the Beating he had recieved prior to getting arrested..not from the Alcohol, although he was 3x's the limit.Either way the Man IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for his own Death but someone is!Someone will be in trouble for it!

If he had been sober and wasn't a repeat offender and hadn't been hanging with other losers he might have saved himself. If he wasn't capable of that he should have had a keeper.

None of what you are saying matters now..he died as a result of his injuries...that's not his fault no matter how you try to twist it! I say the the person who assaulted him needed to be the one with a keeper!!! I sure hope you never have a relative in similar circumstances, would you say they should have had a keeper too ???

I don't care how drunk you are, how many times you have been to jail, he did not deserve to be kicked numerous times in the stomach and be left in the snow to die. If he was that drunk he couldn't of fought too hard, call the police... Don't beat someone and leave them to die. Amd not only was it passed up by regional but multiple inmates reported something was wrong with him before he was even checked on. I feel for his family, so many people failed this man. My prayers go out. It's very saddening how far we let some people fall in society and pay it no mind. It was as if he didn't matter at all.

The only persons that failed him are himself and his so called family and friends.
