Like this was a real big surprise. They canned 660 employees because of a huge risk the company took. It was a last ditch effort to keep the Terre Haute Plant, but it failed. So now you have this huge plant with 140 employees, hmmm. I think that might be overkill just a bit. I just hope that the city doesn't get sucked into another big company that can't pull it's weight in the community.

People need to STOP relying on these plant jobs, especially in small cities like Terre Haute! New effective technology is taking over, and the economy is horrible, which eliminates these kind of blue collar plant jobs that are here for a minute, and then gone in seconds! People need to go to college and get a service job working with people,(accounting, social work, retail management, insurance, recreation, teaching, etc...) those are the fields that are growing and will NEVER leave communities! Terre Haute has a good amount of colleges and even a large university (ISU) for people to attend and afford! Terre Haute needs to push the importance of education. There should be no reason why Terre Haure is behind the way it is.

Terre Haute is behind the way it is for two reasons...the first is the leadership, and the second is the morale. In reality, those two go hand in hand perfectly. Without quality leadership, there will be no morale. People can't be proud of something when there is nothing to be proud of. Terre Haute has, in the past, been a thriving community. Although, I do believe that we should focus on our ability to educate in this city, we first have to be able to attract quality people into those educational institutions. We can't even get a President into ISU because clearly Terre Haute doesn't have enough to offer a new family moving in. Pfizers is no surprise...just as there will be no surprise when many others decide to pull up stakes and leave because there is nothing left in this community. It is definitely a sad situation.

Well, now will some of you rethink your constant harping against big business? Funny how so many complain about these companies till they leave and we realize how much they contributed to our community. Good luck making up for the loss.

I think it is funny how some thhink service jibs is the answer to everything wrong in this world... My only question is Where will value be created, If nothing new is produced?

What do you mean plant jobs that are here for a minute then gone in seconds? I believe that Pfizer's has been located in Terre Haute since before WWII. I don't call that a short term employer!

So what Pfizer is leaving? Pfizer did absolutely nothing for local business for years. The vast majority of corporate purchasing has been directed elsewhere for years. The support of local business, from every facet, has been virtually non existent. Pfizer is getting what they deserve.....

I'm sure Pfizer can find another medicine to make in the plant. Their excuse was because of genric drugs, can't Pfizer make genric drugs too? Pfizer has been here since the 1940's and has changed through the years why can't they make changes now. because it is cheaper to send work over seas.

Why don't you ask the charities that are going to lose out on the contributions made over the years. Pfizer was the biggest donor I believe the article said. Most large corps have their own purchasing chain so just because they didn't BUY pens/paper here doesn't mean this won't affect all other aspects of Terre Haute consumer spending. Pfizer was a very good company for this area for a long time and has done a lot for the commuity. I hate to see them go for a number of reasons. Life will forge ahead though.

I was saying that in general plants jobs always end up closing or going elsewhere leaving alot of people unemployed, and a city economically crippled...People should not rely on staying at a plant/factory job for long periods of time these days.

You have no idea what you are talking about, John Williams...Im not referring to pens and papers, Im referring MRO items, motors, bearings, gearboxes, tubing, tools, etc....big dolllar day to day spending...these items have been purchased contractually from Indianapolis based companies, not Terre Haute....as far as the Charities are concerned, I agree....but the charities havent granted long term tax abatements....the county has...paid for by yours truly....the citizens, and workers of Vigo County...so, in laymens terms, they are taking....and certainly not giving back, except for charities, which, ironically, are tax write offs...

Today they announce 600 new jobs, great! Only problem is these jobs pay $9.00 an hour vs $15-19 an hour. Great job there Mitch!! That is really something to brag about. How can you support a family on $19,000 a year.
