Bemis Co. is telling its employee they must submit to manditorty health risk assesments or lose their insurance for their whole family January 1, 2009.
What is bad is this is against our contract, the National Labor Relation Act and our civil rights of privacy, that will soon result in health discrimination. Bemis told employees that you must sigh away your HIPAA rights and allow a third party named Kersh Wellness have all your families private medical info and fill out surveys to learn your family history. Why do they need our blood? What gives Bemis the right to put my most private medical info on the internet on a national data bank? They dont care about the employee they are findind the risk to eliminate them. The old, sick, high blood pressure, sugar, etc...
If Bemis cared about our health why are they threatening to drop our families health care insurance if we dont submit to these unlawful test?
Corporate Greed is the answer. They want to pay the CEO and Board of Directors another few million off the blood and sweat off the workers back.
We have around 820 union members with between 1 and 45 years of service to Bemis. Is this the way to say thanks for a job well done?

Absolutely disgusting. This is the future of America. Coroporations do what they want without regard for the law, ethics or legal and binding contracts. Where will it end? At the point where workers set aside their differences and band together to fight.

The United States is in a healthcare crisis - many unions still have no clue the long term affects of their wayward stances on situations like this. For the audiences' knowledge, the testing that will be required to be performed is a blood test of glucose (indicator of diabetes) and cholestrol (indicator of heart disease and high blood pressure). These will be the only blood tests taken. Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans - not exclusively but primarily due to lifestyle choices such as obesity and smoking. Diabetes is one of the most explosive and out of control medical conditions diagnoised in the United States in modern times. It to is - not exclusively - but primarily due to lifestyle choices. Excessive caloric intake and lack of exercise. The other tests that will be taken will be height and weight measurements and waist size. That's it. Out of the this information along with a questionaire, there will be a report generated to the employee and spouse outlining the risk factors you have. Hopefully you will be able to take this information and make changes which will positively affect your own health so you can be with your family for many years to come. Simply doesn't seem like that big of a deal. Obviously you see differently and I respect that. Don't paint this as doom and gloom - there are many companies moving toward this type of proactive healthcare approach. All for the betterment of there workers and to keep out of control medical expenses down.

What betterment of workers? This simply sounds like big corporations trying to pry into the personal lives of its employees! If they already have health insurance then that is all the employer needs to provide, enough said! The employer's need to know every little thing that goes on in the personal lives of its employees stops when they clok out, sure and simple! The employee pays for their health insurance, and most pay a hefty price for it already!
Don't try to sugar coat it for us, all your testing is really for is to show who is at a higher risk to the company so that when lay-off's ome around they have a better idea of who they can target to let go and get out of the company first!
AP & S Clinic did that a few years ago, they "let go" of the older employees who had used FMLA and personal leave as well as their medical insurance, and now they are supposedly the "healthiest clinic" in the Valley! But at the cost of it's employees who needed their jobs for the insurance that had families to support and were good employees, some never missing any work outside of FMLA time off for other family emergencies.
Don't try to force your ideals of health risk assessments down our throats just because you "think" that it will keep us with our families longer. The plain and simple, black and white truth is you want to force your HRA down our throats because the company wants to know in times of trouble who is the biggest liabiity and who they can let go first! Or even who they can put more stress on first to make them quit due to serious health problems! Perhaps they'll have a heart attack on the job from the stress and the company can hold the HRA results over the family's head and say, "because of the results we're not going to pay the life insurance dues, if only they had listened to us!" Spare us!

Offer a "Healthy Clue" to some other Union who is naive enough to buy into it! It was voted out for a reason and needs to stay out! When I clock out what I do on my time is my business, NOT the company's! If the company wants to pay me for 24 hours of work for 7 days a week, then I will gladly submit any tests they want, until then, I don't think so! I don't want my health or blood work typed into some "database" that gets sent to god knows where and is accessible by god knows who!
The United States IS in a health care crisis, but who was it created by? The greedy health care industry for wanting more money to build fancy doctor's offices with real oak trim and 200 gallon fish tanks filled with $500 fish, and big drug companies who can make a pill for 5 cents and then market it for $500! That is greed! It is no wonder that Americans are sick or have to choose between food or medicine! And big companies don't care! THAT is where the health care crisis comes from! NOT from Americans who don't take care of themselves!
So before you go and offer your "Healthy Clue" consider this, healthy Americans die early too! There are American's out there who go to the doctor regularly and are healthy and still die at age 50, then there are Americans who go to the doctor once in a while and aren't in the best of health, maybe have had a heart attack or stroke, and live to be 85! Then there those who only go when they get sick, maybe a cold, smoke a pack a day, and will live to be a 100!
Your tests don't prove anything! Medicine is science, not God! It is not proven to prolong life and it is not proven to enhance it. Your tests are merely a scientific experiment for a big corporation that wants a little "dirt" on its employees! Didn't Hitler perform experiments on the prisoners in his concentration camps in the name of science and medicine? I think I have made my point!

THERE IS NO MAGICAL CLAUSE THAT STATES YOU MAY LOSE YOUR BENEFITS EXCEPT FOR BEING ON MEDICAL LEAVE FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, YOU RETIRE, YOU QUIT, YOU GET FIRED OR YOUR ON NON MEDICAL LEAVE OR LAID OFF FOR MORE THAT 90 DAYS.

It is nice to see someone from the company come on here and post. But why doesnít the company go to the 1426 message board and debate the issues in front of the Union members? The truth is because they would lose and their true motives would be seen by all.
The company just should have came out and admitted that they were doing this because of cost saving not because they care about the individuals. The only thing that we have heard at our plant is how much money the company can save. ONLY corp. has talked about people getting help after being forced to get physicals.
If you have a healthy workforce the company saves money by having less people call in because of illness. That means less people needed for overtime or equipment shut down because of staffing. But yet they routinely deny people leave of absence for illness and force people to come in sick and infect others because they changed they attendance pro worker attendance policy. Now you are in trouble because you get sick a couple times of year, or you come to work.
The company saves money from the insurance company because they say we are participating in this plan but the workers do not see 1 dime of that. If 100% of everyone helps in the savings why not share the wealth?
Usually companies only stop the insurance companies from raising the premiums for a couple years. So why not freeze ours? Why not give us some piece of the savings? Is the company afraid to sit down, show the numbers, and bargain in good faith?
Why does Hazleton have a different HRA than ours? Are they going to change ours next year and force rectal exams on us like they forcing them?
When asked if they were going to make our kids do it, they said not at this time.
When asked about people with religious issues, they said if they cannot do this then they donít go to doctors anyway and therefore donít need insurance.
Why does the NON AMERICAN PLANTS not have to do this? It was said because they all have socialized health care. But the company does not and NO 3rd party gets their (the employees of NON US PLANTS) private info, so why must we turn over ours? Why is it not good enough to just go to my family doctor and MY family doctor councils me on MY problems?
This is just how companies start with HRAís. First it is voluntary, then mandatory, then you are assigned a councilor of some type, and then they demand life style changes. If at any time you donít follow through with their plan then you lose your health insurance or worse terminated. This will not end with simple tests that donít have to be followed up on like Offering a Healthy Clue says, it never does. Companies invest a lot of money in these programs and expect a big return from saving in health care costs.
We negotiated a contract and yet they openly break it. They admitted to negotiating mandatory HRAís out of the contract and that it would only be voluntary for the duration of the contract. When addressed the company representative scoffed and said they were doing it anyway, and then tried to explain some backdoor loop hole that does not exist.
We should all be responsible and try to be healthy for our familyís sake. But I should decide who the doctor is. It is between myself and my doctor as to the best course of action to get healthy, not some 3rd party glorified nurse running us through the chute like cattle.
If this company cannot be trusted to honor a signed legal contract, then how can they be trusted to only use my blood to notify me of health risks and not to discriminate against me, my Union Brothers and Sisters, my NON Union co workers, and all our families?

IF BEMIS CARED ABOUT OUR HEALTH WHY DIDN'T THEY HAVE PREVENATIVE HEALTH CARE FOR 48 YEARS. WHY DONT BEMIS EARN THE TRUST OF THEIR EMPLOYEE BY OFFERING A PROACTIVE COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH PROGRAM THAT THE EMPLOYEES DONT LOSE EVERY CONTRACT. INSTEAD OF THREATS AND ULTIMATUMS WHY NOT GIVE MEANINGFUL INCENTIVES AND A PARTNERSHIP APROACH THAT EVERYONE CAN ACHIEVE? WHY WOULDN'T BEMIS OFFER THIS PROGRAM AND ALLOW THE MEDICAL INFORMATION TO STAY BETWEEN THE EMPLOYEE AND THEIR FAMILY DOCTOR?
IM SHOCKED THAT I COULD NOT EVEN GET MY WIFES MEDICAL INFORMATION WITHOUT A RELEASE FROM HER, BUT BEMIS EXPECTS US TO GIVE UP OUR INFORMATION TO KERSH WELLNESS OR ELSE. WHO IS KERSH WELLNESS? IF YOU'RE SO PROACTIVE AND CARE WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO DEMAND THAT EMPLOYEES SHARE THE COST OF THE HEALTH PROGRAM?

wow. i have lived in terre haute for 50 years and i always thought this plant was a good place to work. all of this is so terrible. what kind of people are these people that manage this plant. who is the plant manager? is he from terre haute or is he a corporate head hunter? what is the plant manager doing to try to stop this from happening. these are his people too and he has a responsibility to watch out for their best interest.
