Hate to say it but,
Poisoning these animals is logically the best solution.

Unfortunately the real shame is there are
"70 million feral cats live in the United States"

The cost of neutering usually ranges from $50 to $100. The cost of spaying, which is more complicated, usually ranges from $100 to $200.

Let's assume that there are 20.oo neuter jobs
and 100.00 spay jobs.

we will say that there is an equal split on the feral cat population, of males and females.

so 70m / 2 = 35m each
FEMALE Cats = 35,000,000 cats x 100.00 spaying fee
Totals for Female Cats: 3,500,000,000 USD

Male Cats = 35,000,000 cats x 20.00 neutering fee
Totals for Male Cats: 700,000,000 USD

----
Ok so now we know its going to cost:$4.2 Billion dollars to correct the problem as of the date that the national geographic had posted their findings.

Now considering that the other factors such as how quickly the cats reproduce, and multiply that by years taking to get the problem under control.

that 4.2 Billion dollar guestimate is only a fraction of real cost. That's assuming that all cats are in hand and ready to be clipped.
its not, we have factors like, catching them, and rate we can implement.

It is impossible what your asking.
and it's only idealistic, but not realistic.
these cats need to be exterminated to prevent future generations to multiply and then have a much larger effect.

Sorry, but the numbers speak.

@ happy cat:

With regard to your comment about them suffering...

So what? Does a Coyote or Wolf suffer when they are shot during population control? Yes and they are a higher levelof animal than a house cat, but when it has to happen, it has to happen. They are NOT humans! Get that through your ammonia damaged brain! Does a rat suffer when it is poisoned? Yep . Does that so us? No. And rays are of similar intelligence to house cats. When a pidgeon lands on a glue strip or spike strip and dies we dont feel bad for it because it is a pest, same concept. Wake up and face reality these cats need to be exterminated.

Evidently, their owners have little concern with the cat's suffering....if they insist on infecting the neighborhood, by their letting them roam free.......why should other's have to put up with that rude behavior?....

the feral cats are the issue.. people need to stop
feeding the cats.. they are teritorial. So kill one another will replace it. Trap it have it fixed and release it. So they tell me..I have not killed any yet.. but the urine smell is soooo strong..
and with the feds cuttin back. im told they cant fix em anymore. My mother grew up on the farm in MO
and she told me her job was puddercat control. They are good for keeping down the mice. but when they over populate my mother would put them in a pillow case and slam em against the barn.I wonder if ya can freez em like fish or stuff em in the bastards car tail pipe that keeps feedin and not fixin. its the sprayin ass males that stink ooo soooo bad..O i have four dogs and just learned that when a cat sprays your doors it causes your dogs to pee inside.

The other night one of the feral cats in my neighborhood was lying in the middle of my street after dark. I slowed down and it stayed in the middle as I attempted to drive around it. Right as I was passing, it ran under the right front wheel of my truck and was smashed. There were cat guts everywhere, and blood got on my truck and there was cat fur stuck to my tire. Disgusting! It's too bad that these pathetic creatures can't be put down but instead our neighbor feeds them, growing their numbers. The neighbor actually thinks they are doing a good deed. These cats should be exterminated, period.

Allow me to educate you.
Killing cats is illegal....and so is speeding, so is man on man relations and co-habitation in many places still. Some laws deserve to be broken.
Cats don't carry diseases? How about toxoplasmosis, hook worms, tetanus, rabies, ring worms, for the ones that sicken / kill humans, and how about parvo for killing dogs, especially puppies?
Saved us from the plague? Hardly. Again, if you had picked up a few books and bothered to educate yourself, you would know that the ONLY reason humans were not completely wiped out by the plague is that (as scientists have shown) a large percentage of people have a gene that makes them immune to the disease, as well as other diseases. Those who didn't have the gene, died.
Surgery is cheaper that killing them? Nah. A can of cat food with anti-freeze costs less than a dollar and will snuff out the average cat. Also one can catch them in a re-usable cage, then when you have a box of cats, dump them in the middle of nowhere where they can either die or at least not be a bother to humans. The pellet from a high powered pellet rifle costs only pennies and will usually dispatch a cat as well. You need to check your math, because snuffing out cats is very affordable compared to doing surgery on them.
Nobody said it was the cats fault for being abandoned. But when they are pests, they need to be eliminated. It's not a matter of "punishing them". It's not a personal matter. It's a matter of pest control. Don't like mice? Put out some mouse bait or traps. Nobody needs nasty, stinky, foul cats making the world smell like ammonia and scratching cars, digging up flower beds, killing local birds and squirrels and chipmunks. There are other ways to control mice and rats and I would choose those options ANY DAY over having a foul disgusting cat around.
Surprised some on here aren't killing homeless people? That's because you, like most cat FREAKS don't realize that cats are not equal to humans. Humans are above ALL animals, and cats are at the bottom of the totem pole in the animal kingdom. They are vermin, and they are pests. Killing a cat is exactly the same as stepping on a roach, or killing a mouse or a snake. Pest control. Just because you think they are fuzzy and cute does not make them any less of a nuisance for the normal humans around you that don't want their property fouled and destroyed by your disgusting cats.
You had better hope you never live near me and let your cats out.
You better hope that you never live near me.

There are better, more humane and legal means for removing feral dogs and cats.

Cat owners!! An outdoor cat is not a pet anymore than if I said I have an outside dog that just wanders around. You don't want your precious cat to get hurt buy a leash and walk your cat when it needs to go outside and don't forget the POOP BAGS! I am so sick of people justifying cats that they let wander the neighborhood and saying they are pets(They are homeless vagrants that you feed). I view cats as currently in my neighborhood there are over 30 cats running loose and I am tired of holding my dog back from dangerous wild animals. Would we even be having this discussion if there was an infestation of wild boars in downtown Miami or would we be stocking up on boar poison when animal control says we don't deal with stray boar you have to catch them yourself as they tell you with cats.

Riddle me that
