San Francisco remembers African American exodus

There are 16 comments on the abclocal.go.com story from Apr 23, 2008, titled San Francisco remembers African American exodus. In it, abclocal.go.com reports that:

This week San Francisco is marking the anniversary of an event most people have never heard of.

Many blacks in San Francisco during the 1850'S were entrepreneurs or merchants.

Whatever their status, they were impacted by racism including attempts by the legislature to keep more blacks from coming to California.

Therefore, many simply left.

lol what's changed? I lived in the Bay Area 18 years and it's still "liberally" racist albeit done with economics.

if you don't believe me take a look at the commercial for California tourism. There's not recognizabley African face. The only "black" was Vanessa Williams and that says a lot about the color of Black they want around them.

At the end of the commerical the gov and his bride sit at the table after all these european faces, and say "come you're welcome."..lol

So many blacks have left California and returned to the south (shug)..because they just weren't wanted by the whites or the mexicans.

wow! and i had been giving california some serious thought for future moves, but i too was concerned about the large and growing number of mexican immigrants (legal and illegal) and their impact on african american communities there - especially in socal. i am also deeply concerned about the attacks on black neighborhoods by mexican gangs out there.

I just left Sausalito and it was interesting to say the least.

Ironically I do feel better in the South - even though there is not the same level of economic growth.

These are my concerns too. I would like to relocate to SoCal in the future, but scared to do so.

If your are deciding to relocate my advice to you is to check out states in the eastern and central time zones, were the African American communities are large and estasblished. I have talked to people who live or have lived in california and the future dosn't look bright for Blacks out there. The west coast future will be dominated by mexicans/chicanos who will also control economic activity in the southwest states like Arizona,New Mexico and Colorado. I'm not saying that if you aren't a qualified person you cant get a job but it will be more difficult because normally mexicans and other hispanics look out for each other. Your best option is to look at cities in the south, southeast or midatlantic states. Also you can google best cities for blacks/African Americans and it may give you some good advice.

If you want to do film and tv,LosAngeles would be the best place to locate, also New york would be #2. This industry has many African Americans in it who produce and direct films and own production companies. This is probaly one of the few industries that I would say would be a good reason to move to CA. I have also heard that there are a lot of struggling actors/actresses who work odd jobs or do commercials to makeit until they get their first opportunity. You do have a lot of blacks in the industry who have power so opportunities are there.

The South East is the best place in america for us because there are blacks coming by the thousands each year for better living, jobs, and schools for their children.

i have some friends in S.D.(the best weather in the world) and they just feel so alone out there. Many of the few "blacks" in S.D. have become 1st level negros (completely assimilation to whiteness) and the blacks who still have some affinity to Africaness are just lost....

yeah in S.F. that's IS a problem but they stay mostly to themselves in the large Chinatowns. In L.A. the Koreans and some S.E. Asians are a little different because they are in and amongst what few of us are left..

SD is beautiful! I didn't see any blacks when I went there.
