I don't know what to say. Since when does speeding off equate to a death sentence? I'm definitely going to keep the family in our prayers. Officers always say they were being dragged or feared they might be hurt. I really hope the camera was on. I'm speechless. This very same senario repeats itself too often. Death penalty without a trial no courthouse or judge.

Lord Jesus please intervene so these senseless killings of young men can cease!!! Officer--- did you have to shoot to kill?! Did he really deserve the death penalty-- I'm mad and I am sick and tired of this behavior from those who supposed to protect and serve!! Oh I get it-- protect your ego first-- ok, got it and to hell with preserving the life of another person. I wonder if we will ever know the REAL story now. I guess we have to go by what the officer says. Terry Cox deserved more.

Lest we not forget there were other people in the car that can attest to whether or not the officer was pinned in the vehicle. Do you really believe the officer just walked up and shot him?! I haven't heard anything from the young lady in the vehicle. All to often people take the side against the law because of a few bad apples that wear a badge. Walk a mile in their shoes and deal with the day to day crap like they do with the increase in violence and lack of responsibility. I'm not saying he deserved to die. What I am saying is lets get all of the story before we start condemning the officer for defending his own life.

First it seems everyone should read the full story, which still doesn't answer all the questions. Here it is as reported by Channel 10. TEMPLE (December 31, 2011)-- Terry Ray Cox, 20, of Temple, who was shot and seriously injured as he attempted to speed off after a traffic stop, dragging a veteran Temple police officer whose armed was pinned in his SUV, died just after 6 a.m. Saturday at Scott & White Hospital, police said.
His body will be sent to Dallas for an autopsy, police said.
The Texas Rangers are heading up an investigation of the shooting and their findings will be presented to a Bell County Grand Jury.
Temple Police Chief Gary Smith, in a statement released Saturday, said it’s understandable “that citizen concerns are heightened” when an officer uses deadly force.
“I want to assure everyone that these situations are fully investigated and reviewed, both within the Temple Police Department, and by an outside agency, Smith said.
“While the officer involved in this incident is receiving our full support as he recovers from his injuries, I am mindful that Mr. Cox’s family is mourning his passing. They are in my prayers, as are all involved in this event,” he said.
The officer who shot Cox, Sgt. Gary E. Smith, an 11-year police veteran, was released from the hospital on Christmas Eve, a day after he was admitted with injuries to his legs and arms.
Smith pulled the over the SUV that Cox was driving late in the morning on Dec. 23 in the area of North 4th and Central Avenue and then called for backup when he became suspicious, police said.
The officer ordered Cox to get out of the vehicle, but instead the driver, who had the two adults and the toddler riding with him, pinned the officer’s arm in the window of the SUV and accelerated in an attempt to escape, dragging the officer for 50 to 60 yards, police said.
Smith then fired at least one shot at the Cox, police said.
The SUV, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, swerved off Central Avenue onto North 6th Street, struck a building and a utility trailer, at which point the officer fell to the concrete.
The SUV came to rest against the side of a large unoccupied pickup truck, police said.
Smith, Cox and the two adults and a toddler who were in the SUV were taken to local hospitals.
Once Smith has completed medical leave, he’ll be placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation of the shooting, police said.
Second, any peace officer has the right and duty to protect their own life as well as the public.
Third, a peace officer firing at a suspect does not shoot to wound or kill. If they shoot, it is to stop the aggression. In this case, it is a result of being dragged by a car by a suspect that was felon evading in a vehicle.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of everyone involved in this.

You people need to chill and take a breathe. Wishing death upon people and name calling is ridiculous. Grow up. A man is dead for his wrong doings. It is sad. A family has lost a loved one and put them in the ground today. Police officers dont pull their weapon unless their lives are endangered. At the same time officers do not like killing people. It is tough to pull a trigger and take a life. It messes with your head. Something you think about every day for your entire life. Mistakes could have been made on both parts but why act like both humans are angels? Mr. Cox has a criminal history. Officer Smith may have known things the news is not reporting. Mr. Cox might have thought it would be better to take a chance than go to jail. I dont know but I dont believe everything the news says. What about the other people in the vehicle? Their testimony along with the video footage and bystanders will decide where the investigation goes. And as far as racism, shut up already. We are all people. I have had a family member killed by another race. It doesnt matter what color a person is. It is people killing people. Ignorance is racism. You want to get even and talk all big and bad, gonna cap someone,, then you are no better than the next gang banger who just killed a homie. Come on people, pray, grieve, be mad, but disrespecting the dead, the family of the dead, and the other people involved is stupid. My prayers are with the families of everyone involved. Losing loved ones is not easy but revenge and disprespect is not the way to healing. It will just make you more angry and fill your heart with hatred.

I am sure that had the officer NOT shot this young man, he would have eventually pulled over. I am sure of it, after all he was only fleeing the scene so he could get his car to a better location to park maybe? I am sure the officer could have taken a chill pill and NOT been scared for his life because lets be real here, we have ALL been drug by the arm of a fleeing car before and it is not as terrifying as it seems. I guess if he HAD to shoot he could have taken the time during this process of being drug and aimed the gun somewhere he KNEW that would wound the guy ENOUGH that he would slowly pull the car over for the officer. Mr Cox was a GREAT OUTSTANDING MATURE citizen of this town so he did NO wrong in all of this. I am sure his parents.... Im sorry, his mom or grandma did a great job of raising this kid into the great man he was! Damn that cop for trying to protect himself. While I am here, who wants to call me on my new OBAMAPHONE that the white mens with jobs pay for?

Spelling was not your strong point, was it? Terry (AKA T-Ray) was a criminal, pure and simple. Nobody deserves to have their life taken from them until the very moment they decide to take another's life, to which he did. He fought the law and the law won. His older brother is also a criminal. Perhaps if his mother raised those kids with more structure they could have been productive members of society. T-Ray loved committing robberies, burglaries and selling narcotics. I hardly think he deserved anything other than what he received when he attempted to kill that officer.

Sincerely,
Not-A-Criminal
