Federal Income Taxes on Middle-Income Families Remain Near Historic Lows

By Chuck Marr

Updated April 2, 2012

Federal taxes on middle-income Americans are near historic lows,[1] according to the latest available data.

That’s true both for federal income taxes and total federal taxes.[2]

Income taxes:

A family of four in the exact middle of the income spectrum will pay only 5.6 percent of its 2011 income in federal income taxes, according to a new analysis by the Urban Institute-Brookings Institution Tax Policy Center.[3]

Average income tax rates for these typical families have been lower during the Bush and Obama Administrations than at any time since the 1950s, as Figure 1 shows.

(As discussed below, 2009 and 2010 were particularly low because of the temporary Making Work Pay Tax Credit.)

Overall federal taxes:

Overall federal taxes — which include income as well as payroll and excise taxes — on middle-income households are near their lowest levels in decades, according to the latest data from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

Oh, come on! "Most disliked President in modern history"? Where do you come up with nonsense like that? GWBush was polling in the high 20s, on par with Nixon, at the end of his term. Carter and Bush I were both polling lower than Obama at this point in their Presidencies.

But you're right about one thing - Romney is a dud who doesn't have a prayer.

I know that's true. So when a poll of a Republican-leaning group shows that they're leaning toward the Democrat, that's a significant finding, isn't it?
But when a poll of a Republican-leaning group shows that they're leaning toward the Republican, it's hardly something to crow about.
And, yeah it was me that posted the Reuters poll. Questioning whether "a poster" was lying when Reuters/Ipsos had a poll result seems a little silly, doesn't it?
You forgot to mention the Democrat-leaning polls that show they're leaning towards the Republican. Why didn't you mention that? Or don't those polls count?

Um, Carter at this point was polling at 54-56% depending on the pollster. Obama is polling lower than Carter. Carter was polling higher than Reagan until October. So in 1980 people like you were saying Carter was a lock for reelection. Nope!

And in 1992 Bush 41 was polling at 80%. Nowhere near the mid 40s Obama is garnering.

Dan, I'm gonna ask you some straight up non leading questions.

First, why do you want Obama reelected? What is your vision for his second term? What do you want to see accomplished?

Second, in your opinion, what is the role of the Federal Government? What do you feel they should be doing that they aren't doing now?

Let's have a straight up debate.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a Reuters/Ipsos poll that showed that veterans and their families favored Obama. Since that's a traditionally Republican constituency, I thought it was worthwhile pointing out the results.

This weekend, another poster posted Gallup results that are more in line with history, and called me either a liar or misinformed for posting the Reuters results.

I took issue with that and fully explained myself in post #24036. I wasn't ignoring any polls. I wasn't trying to deceive anyone. I wasn't being selective. I was simply responding to another poster.

THAT'S why I didn't mention any other polls - they weren't what anyone was talking about.

The other poster said that Obama is "the most disliked President in modern history." He didn't qualify that. He didn't say "at this point in his first term." All he said was Obama is the most disliked President in modern history. Period.

And the fact of the matter is that every President from LBJ to GWBush has been "more disliked" at some point in their Presidency than Obama is now.

I seem to remember a poster made the comment that Obama was leading with veterans. Either that poster was lying or misinformed.
Gallup has publicly stated that Obama now has a higher chance of losing rather than winning.
By May, Gallup gave Jimmy Carter a lead over Reagan of 49 to 41, higher than Obama today.
Carter suffered a landslide defeat.
It looks like Obama will be the Jimmy Carter of 2012.
This is for that clueless person from West Mifflin to read.

You say Obama is ahead with the veterans? Not according to a recent Gallup poll. Get with it or continue to look clueless!

If the election were held today, Obama would win the veteran vote by as much as seven points over Romney, higher than his margin in the general population.
"I went to war for George Bush," said Grafton, 48, a retired Army master sergeant who served in special operations units in Somalia and Iraq. "But we can't keep policing the world."
Despite widespread disillusionment over recent wars, most veterans support some form of military action to keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. That doesn't mean they want another ground war: Veterans lean toward a military spending policy that emphasizes special forces and unmanned systems.
Karen Grafton, who voted for Obama in 2008 based on his promise to end the Iraq war, now says, "I want someone to get us out of this economic turmoil. That's No. 1. I'm not sure he is the person to do that. But I don't blame him. He inherited a mess."

Hey simpleton, it's not May 14, it's May 29, and Obama is 24 points behind Romney with the veterans according to Gallup.

Kind of desperate when one has to pull an old poll up to make a point, which is no longer relevent.

Get up to date, FOOL!

Let's have a straight up debate.
Barack Obama is a competent, intelligent, pragmatic, non-ideologue. There are very few of them in DC or interested in becoming President. I value those qualities in a President.

I want Obama to complete the implementation of the ACA. I want him to reform immigration. I want him to finish the economic recovery and begin addressing the long-term stability of our economy.

The role of the federal government is to keep the nation secure and ensure the common good. There isn't MORE that I want the government to do, I just want it to do the things it's been mandated to do effectively and efficiently. I want our immigration system to work. I want our economy to work for EVERYONE. I want our nation to be secure from terrorism without violating citizens' liberties. I want equal rights for all people.

But my biggest concern is that one of the two major political parties seems to have gone completely insane. The make outrageous accusations against the President that aren't even in the same universe as the truth. They have become completely obstructionist, preventing even the basic tasks of governing from getting done. They have an economic agenda that would take the US the way of Europe. They have fiscal policies that increase the number of poor, make the most vulnerable in our society MORE vulnerable, and increase the economic gap between rich and poor to the point that will certainly cause the nation to fall. They alienate the rest of the world, making the nation less safe.

Like I said, I value a competent, intelligent, non-ideological, pragmatic President. There hasn't been anyone like that on the right in 20 years.

So now, please answer the same questions. Please share what your vision for Romney's first term. Please describe what you think the role of the federal government is and what you would like the government to do differently.
