Say No To Wal Mart

United States

#1 Aug 9, 2010
It was recently written in the Letters to the Editor section of the Tehachapi News that there was no need for a Wal-Mart in Tehachapi. What a true statement.. Like it or not Wal-Mart will bring in low paying part time jobs for the Tehachapi area and itís residents. The store offers an average hourly salary of $9 and no opportunities for advancement; and the store offers expensive health care benefits for itís employees.
I do not welcome Wal-Mart to our town for a number of reasons, first of which is that I donít want to lose Save Mart or Albertsons, it has been stated that one will be shut down due to the Wal Mart effect. I like the idea of having a choice in my shopping, that will no longer be the case when Wal Mart opens itís doors and causes the local area shopping venues to close their doors.

Our streets canít handle the added traffic that Wal-Mart will bring and the crime that comes with having a Wal Mart.

Those of us who fear Wal-Mart and Wal-Martís policies can get the ugly facts straight. If you really want to learn about Wal-Mart and see for yourself what a corrupt company it is and the unfair treatment to itís employeeís and how it will hurt our community go to this website link and judge for yourself. Another piece of information not mentioned is that Wal Martís parking lot will have more than 850 parking spaces. Nothing has been mentioned concerning the added pollutants to our air quality and the traffic nightmare.

Oh Yes, there has been mention of it to the Tehachapi Community Development Director David James Ė Planning Chief.

The Environmental Planning/Consultant firm Christopher A. Joseph & Associates hired by the City of Tehachapi, California presented their Draft Environmental Impact Report which states the Wal-Mart project will create nearly 8,100 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year without any project design features, of which 6,700 is from cars.

Information regarding the Wal Mart DEIR it is not made public with intent to conceal pertinent information from Tehachapi residents who are in opposition to Wal Mart in Tehachapi. I can think of no other clarification other than David James our Community Development Director is trying to hide the negative factors of this report in question for his own interest with Wal Mart.

Many agree wit your comment. David James does not live in Tehachapi and I bet he doesn't shop Wal Mart. Yet, he is willing ruin this town with trash *Wal-Mart* We are becoming another Mojave. Very Sad.

I would bet that a lot of the people who want a Wal-Mart here in Tehachapi are the same ones who moaned and groaned about a better hospital in town-and prefer to continue driving to Bakersfield or Lancaster for health care.

Ah yes Walmart watch. A major union funded website using members dues to continue running it. I wonder if they know that their dues are being used for this...

Get your facts straight! first they have yet to build this so called better hospital in capital hills and second health care is still better and safer elsewhere...go take a gander at the hospital coming soon sighn in capital hills if you don't believe me. By the way, you better hope we don't have a major earthquake before it get's built sometime in the next decade!

Oh I see now. Molester's chose to shop at walmart, not kmart, albertson's, savemart, etc. I feel so much safer now.
Secondly is your bet reality or just what you so precieve? Do you even know? If this means so much to you why don't you ask Mr. David James if he shops walmart or not? Are you afraid you won't hear what you want to hear?
Finally why are you emplying that walmart had anything to do with the condition of Mojave. They don't even have a walmart and I bet you just forgot to mention Mojave got bypassed by one of two major highway's to boot. Dont blame walmart for this, blame caltran's for building the new highway 58.

By the time Wallmart opens in Tehachapi many people will realize that they have made a terrible mistake. In 2007 I moved from this area to Leitchfield KY. Leitchfield was a pretty little town with a similar population to Tehachapi. Lots of cute shops and markets were boarded up, in fact all of the towns shops were gone, they had a new Super Wallmart, everyone was excited. Soon Wallmart raised their prices, and when I asked the manager why a 3 oz can of cat food was 13 cents more than wallmart charged in CA or even Elizabethtown 25 miles away he said we have no competition so we can charge what we want. Produce was terrible, service was worse, and now there was no other option, all the other stores were gone. I currently live in Mojave, and if you look at the people waiting at the bus stops for a ride out of town every day, they will be in your town soon, at Wallmart.

Don't miss this morning's Californian story on how Walmart has been blackmailing small towns to skip EPA questions by threatening a costly special election.
