It's no surprise that Eastern Kentuckians are facing a drug epidemic crisis of epic proportions. Have you ever wondered why it was ever allowed to happen?
We, and I include myself, are genetically predisposed to addictive behaviors. Consider why we are here and how our families come to this area of the country. Past needs to be free to do what we want, worship the way we saw as appropriate, and to find a better way of life. Over time, we see ourselves now as having a higher incidence insurance claims, depending on workers compensation, government assistance, and other programs for a means of providing for the basic needs of life.
Insurance companies and our government are funding these programs and we are seen as a liability as far as the almighty dollar is concerned. Rather than seeing the potential in a group of people who have a strong sense of unity and encouraging hard work and a pride in being productive citizens, we see so many people giving up on what the American dream used to be. Have we given up?
We see so many people depending upon pain medications, nerve medications, and now even illicit street drugs (bath salts, meth, etc.) to escape the feelings that God gave us to function and thrive while living on this earth. What better way to "weed" out a group of people that are a monetary liability for what people in power see as lazy, unproductive, and uneducated than to allow addiction to run rampant through our community?
Do you consider yourselves "weeds" like they do? I would hope not. Opportunities for help are there and even though our addictive natures may not be all of our responsibility, our choice to make this place better for our children, our neighbors, our world...and especially, for ourselves IS our responsibility.
The next time you ask yourself if you "need" a nerve medication, a pain pill, or something that would fall into such a category...ask yourself if it is a beneficial aspect of your life or is it numbing you of the feelings, emotions, or providing an escape from something we all should feel and manage to reach our potential in life. More than likely, it's just preventing you from being all that you can be. I don't want to be a "weed"...I would rather be something good for everyone to see, experience, and want to be like. Let's stop weeding ourselves out...shall we? It's about time.
