This happened up near or in Tazewell County in 1999 in the summer I believe; I was about 37 at the time. I was working about an hour s/w of Tazewell itself - following the U.S. 460 - on my way to work. It was still dark out, maybe 4:30 a.m. I was driving alone, about 55 mph in the fast lane of a 4-lane highway, separated by a median, with the mountain/woods on my right side. Out of nowhere a very large animal jumped out in front of my car landing inbetween the fast and slow lanes on my side. It turned it's head and looked at my car for a second, and took another giant leap landing on the median. It then immediately jumped from the median and over the side of the road where it disappeared. All of this happened in a matter of seconds, There was another vehicle on the road next to me at that time in the slow lane, a little bit behind me, the driver was male maybe in his 40's, no passengers with him either. I was so shocked I slowed down to about 45 miles an hour and at that point in time the truck was beside me. The driver looked over, as I looked over at him, both of us astounded at what we'd just seen with our mouths hanging open. We both on continued on down the road at about 45 mph, never speaking or connecting, other than that look. The animal we saw was jumping more than running on all fours, making giantic strides with those three leaps. It was about 4 feet high on all fours, maybe as long as a cow, had long dark blackish hair (hard to tell at night) messed up like a long haired poodle. It wasnt a dog or wolf, because it was using both front legs simultaneously to clutch at the ground to give it leverage for it's leaps, and it was too large to be any of those. It couldn't have weighed less than 300 pounds. I felt no threat other than the fear of hitting him, it all happened so fast that details of what I was doing is lost to me, but I had slowed down by around 10 miles an hour by the time I "collected" myself within seconds enough to look over at the other driver. To this day I cannot put a face on the animal, but was shocked a the size and the ability to leap large distances as it did. I've never heard or seen anything like that in my life, and clearly neither had the other driver, from his reaction.
