It is a blessing, the standards for learning are far lower here int he south than in the north. It's a proven fact that "Yankee" equivalency testing throughout a child's entire school career is higher than "hillbillies" (since were name calling). Yankee's don't spend 3/4 of the school year drilling the answers to the S.O.L. tests into the children's heads and the last quarter celebrating high test scores.
So here's to you Randy!!! Good choice, thank you!

AMEN TO THAT!!!!!! At my daughter's school they are either "practicing" for the SOL so they can up the scores to get more $$$ or coming up with a new way to get the parents to send $$$ or better yet more cleaning supplies (like we didn't provide enough at the beginning of the year!!!!! It is definitely time for a change!! Finally this guy did something right!!!!

STATE Standards are STATE Standards meaning all the same across the state. Whew you can tell these opinions are from individuals who do not even know what are or how SOLs are utilized. The fact that the new superintendent will be from NOVA means problems for all involved and the ones who will suffer the most will be the children. This woman is 65 years old and only being offered a three year contract because she is foused on raising her retirement. Think about it, what actual accomplishments could any leader make in a limited term position except possibly carry out vendettas for school board members in return for her employment with a higher salary, annuities, and investment monies. Way to go again Taz Co Schools, people may as well anticipate the consolidation of schools and dismemberment of local schools. One should not think for a second that any person who has an ingrained mentality of upstate, higher class, and city schools is going to be worried about a child from Appalachia. The acceptance of this job by this individual is about the last three years of employment being at a higher salary rate to raise a state retirement. I wish the state dept would take over this county and put the school board members out because they do not do what any of the public want, only what fulfills whatever power needs they have.

So glad somebody is telling the truth. I heard Lawson got thrown out of her own executive session school board meeting because the school board members were pissed at her because of the hell hole that THS has turned into, especially since she was the one that put the people there as principal and asst. principal , but to those people's credit she told them to do certain things and then when they did and people complained she threw them under the bus and overturned their decisions. Now she is doing another shake up and demoting/transferring administrators upon her eve of commencement as superintendent. Pretty sure this county's business's of education isn't about educating any children, it's about playing God! Let us bow and praise her and our school board for destroying any integrity that was left in this forsaken excuse of a County! If there is a HELL I hope I'm in charge of the blowers so I can burn their asses up when I meet them there!

My understanding is that she declined the initial "agreed upon" salary of just over $100K and they offered her $169K to take the job. She jumped on it. The board can't pay teachers, hire teachers, upgrade facilities and provide extra resources, but they can magically pull $60K out of the air? We need a new school board who prioritize and put children first.

This school board has now sealed their fate! If they think for a minute that we are not going to vote them out they are as dumb as they look, cross eyed. These idiots think the public doesn't see them for what they really are which isn't much. Enjoy your last self serving decisions,

Well, Tazewell County Board of Education has not been about education for a long time. The pirority of the board is beat in the school days, even if they are 4 hours long, pay the staff all the tax payers can handle and play ball. Brenda Lawson came on board with a desire to educate our children to the best of the childs learning ability, but soon she too was pulled down to just play the politics of education in Tazewell county. An outsider for three years may get the education system back in the righ direction, if the School Board will allow it. In fact the Superintendent has the power to do about anything if she will just do it. We don't need anyone local, they only fall in and take care of themselves and their buddies. Oh, and Randy will have compitation in the election, so the people will have a choice.

Where did you get the idea she was a Yankee? All I see in the press release is Nebraska which is the midwest and New Orleans which is more southern than Virginia. Sure she spent time in Ohio, but it is as redneck if not more than Tazewell County.

Meyer is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelors of Science in Education, a Masters of Education in Administration, and a Ph.D. in Educational Studies (Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership).

According to a news release, Meyer began her career as a special education teacher in Baton Rouge, La., then returned to Nebraska where she continued to teach both general and special education students before moving into supervision of special education programs and then into administration as an elementary principal serving in both rural and suburban school districts.

In 1998 she relocated to Ohio where she began working as a school improvement specialist and for eight years traveled around the state working with schools that were identified as being in "academic failure" or "academic warning."

For the past seven years she has served as deputy superintendent for Manassas City Public Schools, where she has guided the curriculum, assessment and instructional program Pre-K-12; as well as assisted with the school/district improvement planning and implementation process.

Yes and they eliminated her position and that is why she was looking for another job. Her capability and education is not what should be questioned because I am sure she will attempt to do her best. The fact of the matter is that three board members have chosen to vote for this individual to fulfil their own power needs. Stakeholders across the county have lobbied and practically begged for the next superintendent to be someone who is ingrained in this county so needs of schools, students, and teachers can best be fulfilled. However, three school board members have chosen to deviate from their constituents requests and instead use their own power which is circumvented from serving as a school board member to fulfil whatever personal obligation or vendetta by choosing this candidate. This lady is probably a wonderful person but by the time she realizes the horrible inevitable it will be too late. Shame on u Randy Conn for making Tazewell voters, your previous supporters, the sacrificial lamb! My mother always said the devil can sit on the front church pew and recite scripture but it doesn't mean he's getting back into Heaven. God keep our children safe from this spineless creatures who are too weak to resist these temptations of greed and power.

Wow Brenda so you are saying that her education and skills don't really matter to you. All you want is someone from the area. I would hope that you little closed off mind will at least give her a chance before you draw and quarter her.

I am glad that it is someone from outside Tazewell County. Maybe she will not be influenced by small county politics and will do what is best for the children.

No matter where she is from if she does what is best for the children, isn't that all matters?

"Stakeholders across the county have lobbied and practically begged for the next superintendent to be someone who is ingrained in this county so needs of schools, students, and teachers can best be fulfilled."

So Brenda, who in your opinion, was the best choice as you seem to have the inside scoop on things?

Another question for Brenda- if you are so concerned about the superintendent's position, how come you were not at the public meeting on January 21? I have read the minutes and no one named Brenda spoke. For that matter, no one named Brenda has spoken at any of the School Board meetings this year.

For that matter if those who posted their concerns such as Conman, Sweetheart, FYI, GhostsofthePast, Disapponted and Actually were as concerned as they claim to be, how come THEY were not at the public meeting?

From the press release "she served as an elementary school principal in both rural and suburban school districts before moving to Ohio in 1988 where she worked for eight years as a school improvement specialist. Many of the schools Meyer worked with in Ohio were within the Appalachian region."

Hmmm Conman and FYI guess you were out that day in school when the class was taught what made up the APPALACHIAN region.

Each Election we need to clean house, new faces every election. That way they are not full time corrupt.

Maybe we need someone who is NOT from Tazewell County. Maybe we need someone to take care of our school system with an unbiased approach. Someone who isn't involved in the "politics" of this county. I agree, it is time to clean house in Tazewell County. I recently had to deal with the transportation dept. over an issue with a bus driver & it was horrible. Mrs. Lawson did contact me & she was extremely professional & mortified by what had happened on my child's bus but I never even heard from Steve Davis. Apparently common sense isn't a requirement to drive our children. I will definitely be at the next school board meeting, this is completely unacceptable.
