After the county commission approved with a vote to accept "free" solar panels from Earth Right Energy, Jack Daniels passed out a letter to the 21 "King Georges" before the meeting they then proceeded to veto this resolution. As stated by John Kemp from ERE "the county could expect a maximum 50,000 watts of power from the solar panels". Now folks this is free energy from the sun, the solar panels are basically free and the county was offered 3 payouts which included a $900 per site, per year lease agreement. Would you take a deal like this for your home? Of course not on this large a scale but we need to look deeper why the commissioners were overuled on this. Could it be the connections of higher ups with Ball and Powell Valley Electric?

As stated in Morristown's Citizen Tribune Wednesday July 18, 2012. "During the veto process, Commission Chair Dave Mundy simply stated the project is vetoed by the Mayor. There was complete silence, then on to other business". Were there NONE there that disagreed with the mayor? Something sure smells rotten, it is about time that we stop these "honey and sugar" deals that goes on behind the scenes.

Just asking why the Progress did not report this in the newspaper this week? Am I the only one that finds it odd that we pass up on the opportunity of "free"?

if you depend on the progress for your news you are in a sad state. That is a terrible excuse for anything.

It bothers me that more people are not commenting on this, are they both blind and deaf, or just don't care?

I am not sure what happened. I am John Kemp or Earth right energy. I had a meeting with Mayor Daniels before the veto and he told me directly that all was ok, and he was proceeding. I got all the TVA paperwork complete and accepted by the TVA. Mayor Daniels actually asked me to attend the commission meeting on the 18th of July. I do find it odd that 21 commissions voted for the project that would bring the county over $4500 a year in extra revenue for 20 years and at the end of 20 years the county could purchase the systems at FMV. On July 18th, the mayor vetoed the project and not one of the 21 commissions even questioned the veto. That is very suspicious in my opinion.

Thanks for letting us the public know more about the situation, it seems that the commissioners do not have the balls to do so. The poster after you probably is right, Meyers and Ball have strings attached to most officials here and they only let them do what Meyers and Ball wants. It seems logical to me that PVEC would lose some income if your system worked properly and that they would even have to buy back power correct? That is the way this county is and has been for many years, progress has been slowed down due to these people and others unless they get a piece of the pie. We the common folks need to get rid of these type people just like we did ole Pot Hole Sharp. Who will we get rid of next? Any suggestions?

I am glad that Earth-Right had a chance at least on here to respond. I would love for Danny the Puppet Boy to give a better explanation of why he passed out a paper to the commissioners that glued their mouth shut. Next, I want the commissioners that voted FOR this to speak their mind, after all there is the "Sunshine Law" in Tennessee and we deserve to know.

Guess what, check out what Hawkins County is doing about solar.... Please people, why do we have bad decisions by our decision makers? I will give you an example, too many hands in the till. A few people in power control most decisions in this county. It looks like Hawkins county has their citizens as their main interest instead of some ONE or TWO people as Claiborne County does.

Hawkins school adding new solar sites

Posted on Monday, March 11, 2013 at 11:59 am

The Hawkins County Board of Education is in the process of adding 17 new solar sites to schools and property throughout the county.

Bulls Gap School, Church Hill Intermediate and Clinch School each have roof-mount solar panels and are the first schools in the state to produce solar energy with the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Generation Partnership Program.

“We are pleased with the technical and financial performance of the 400 kilowatts of solar generating capacity already in place at Bulls Gap, Clinch and Church Hill Intermediate schools and are eager to expand the program as much as possible,” Director of Hawkins County Schools Charlotte Britton said.

The 17 new solar sites will include six roof-mount sites and 11 ground-mount sites.

“When we are finished with phase two of our solar project in late April, 2013, we will be able to produce a total of 1,625,000 kWh of electricity each year,” Hawkins County Schools Director of Maintenance and Facilities Bill Shedden said.“Enough electricity will be sold back to TVA to run over 150 normal-size households for a year.”

The projected revenue to Hawkins County Schools from the 20 solar sites will be $875,000 over a 20-year period, or $43,750 annually, according to Hawkins County Schools officials.

A one-time revenue of $1,000 per site is also expected to be earned this year, which would bring the total revenue from the first year’s solar production to $63,750.

The $7 million investment, which was first approved by the board of education in September of 2011, will be funded by third-party investors and requires no investment or net expense by Hawkins County Schools, according to school system officials.

The Hawkins County Schools Solar Project has generated interest among other school systems and organizations as well, officials add, asserting that several groups have visited the solar sites and at least eight other school systems across the state have called to discuss solar energy with Shedden.

“I know of at least two school systems in Tennessee that are in the process of moving forward with their own solar installation, and I know two additional systems are very close to signing agreements,” Shedden said.

The project plan and strategy were developed jointly with John Atkins of TerraShares, a green systems developer located in Morristown and the project’s general contractor is Atlanta-based Hannah Solar, LLC.

Hannah Solar helped attract capital from Distributed Solar Holdings, LLC (DISH) of Charlotte, N.C., officials said, which acquired the overall project and will own and operate the solar energy system for the 20-year term of the TVA contract.

Comer Electric Company, a Morristown electrical contractor, is undertaking all electrical installations. Johnson City based architects Beeson, Lusk, & Street, Inc. are providing roof and structural analyses and certifications.

Holston Electric Cooperative has worked to facilitate the approval by TVA and insure the solar sites are working properly to generate the power back to the TVA grid.

I would be delighted to allow them to install panels on my property. If I can get free electricity and you can make a good profit selling the excess power, bring me a contract.

That would have paid an illiterate County Mayor's salary for one year. Don't try to reach a rational conclusion about Claiborne County without spiritual guidance.I would recommend that you read Ecclesiastes Chapter one and the fifteenth verse."That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered."
