I agree to a point but look what has and is happening to a lot of people in office..... the voters just keep putting them back in. I bet most voters can't tell you about the last questions on the recent ballot, can you? If the voters would pay more attention to what really is going on here in the county and how it affects them surely they would make changes in their voting pattern. I know that at least one of my neighbors still voted for Pot Hole Sharp even though the road right in front of his house is filled with pot holes and has been for some time. At least there were enough people that were tired of the same ole thing, that is what we need to do with most in office, they and some others control most of what goes on in this county. If something doesn't benefit them or their cronies, it will pass by the way. In my opinion that is OUR public corruption. Some of the people in office have just went from one office to another and the people just close their eyes.
And that's the reason I vote against all incumbents!

By providing coverage to open meetings, citizens have a desire to become more involved. As an example, we have seen many individual and group activists rise up. The newspaper is a tool to provide information to the public ~ it is not used to benefit one party or another or one candidate or another. When it comes to reporting of this nature, the facts laid on the table are enough to get people motivated to take action. Leaders are born out of an informed public and those sub-groups take action. As a reporter, no one's claim that I take sides, holds credibility. The facts speak for themselves and although it may not speak favorable of said entity or individual, these are not actions journalists create. The beauty of simply telling the truth concerning open meetings puts power back into the hands of the taxpayer--the citizen--the voter.
After this model has been on the ground for several years here, processes are changing - "we have always done it that way" is no longer an excuse. While there are times we are disappointed in our justice system, we are having many victories relative to the fact that these entities/individuals who carry out actions (good or bad) know they will face the music publicly. Sometimes that is enough to prevent or detour many of the things that went on in the past.
Bless your "innocent" heart. You certainly are not aware of the way things work here. You MUST Google and investigate the past of our officials. You do know that most media is biased no matter which way they swing??? A very good example is the non reporting of the Progress of the "Energy" solar fiasco. As far as the justice system, look who we have as a sheriff, he certainly has at least two important events in his past that are questionable yet the public invites him to police our community???

Haven't been called "innocent" in a long time. Lol...I am sure I have much to learn, but as I have covered several counties, there are always similarities. I am not here to judge anyone...the facts always speak for themselves. People can decide what they want to do once facts are presented. As we have seen of late in Union, the DA is interested in several things I brought to the table. I can bring forth alot, just as anyone can or law enforcement. It is then up to the grand jury and/or citizens to decide. It is amazing what I have learned about how all these gov't entities work together and apart.

BTW, Until recently, I haven't used Topix as a means of communication. I used my Facebook account to relay and interactively blog with the public...at some point, will create a discussion based website for interactivity. For now Topix and Facebook serve their purpose. Topix is an interesting site. As long as we keep our conversations professional, I think it is a good tool...I have had people act like they are me or use my "handle". I will be fixing that shortly. Provide any tips to my email. Good investigations can get compromised if they know we are probing. Its amazing how many gov't files can turn up missing lol.

This is amazing to me. You have a person who is willing to get down and dirty with local government officials and investigate suspicious or corrupt behaviors. No charge to the citizens. Information we all need. Yet, people are on here questioning the integrity or reasons behind such an investigation would be done. Who cares why or how much she is paid for it. It is no cost to you. Only makes life better for everyone, unless you are the one corrupt. Then it would make sense why someone would not want her to invesigate. How could you argue this?
yeah there is always someone on here talking about corrupt police corrupt politicians as if they know all about it so here's your chance put up or shut up.

No worries Daniel...this is what it was like in Union in the beginning. Give it a year, citizens will begin seeing the difference that FREE press makes in a community. There were a few people who wanted to run me out of Union County ~ Now even some of the people who hated me have come around. They realize that it is news backed with facts. That is something they were not used to.

And with the recent voter fraud case, again I have a few folks upset with me, but it is WHAT IT IS. Some people have actually thought I had something against them personally ~ that is because they are emotionally involved. In the early days, I had someone visit the newspaper office once and ask to see me (they were not happy) concerning a mugshot in the newspaper. They asked me if I took pleasure in their pain. I told them, "Absolutely not! I have had to put my own relatives in the newspaper. It is very painful, but I cannot pick and choose." People actually thought I had no heart when in actuality, I have one of the biggest hearts in the world. And I have also fought for those who felt railroaded in the courts. I do pick my battles and most often than not, it is a process, not an overnight solution.

As someone else said on here, there is a difference in having spoon fed news verses non-bias reporting.

The other great thing about having someone WITHOUT political bias is that you get the real deal. Having someone come in from the outside is to the citizen's advantage ~ No spin.:)

And for the record, I do not know the investigative reporter that has posted this thread. I saw the thread and think that it is awewsome that Union and now Claiborne Counties have someone who is willing to provide them with such a service to the citizens. I wish there were more like her for other counties around. It might stop a lot of the "Good Ole Boy" crap that goes on!
It takes alot of work. There used to be alot of grants out there for similar projects, but those wells seem to have dried up. For now, I am doing all I can to keep going. My goal is to work the entire judicial district, but there will have to be "spring-off's" with many more people involved. Accountability and transparency in our governments must begin as grassroot initiatives and grow roots and legs into each community. I am proud to serve as many communities as possible with the assistance of citizens who seek the same accountability. Any and all of your assistance will help us gain momentum with the new Claiborne County initiative. Also keep in mind that this will have to built up via the newspaper distribution and supporters.

I'm no investigator, so "put up" I can not do at this time. But I do know that in my county, with a situation I am going through, there is very suspicious activity. I could put it on here for all to see, but at this time it would be an "accusation" and I would not do that. I would only tell something that I know for sure. Never have I said without a doubt that anything in your county or others are corrupt. What I said was, IF there is suspicious activity going on, why would you not want it investigated unless you are part of that activity. Now in my thread of WARNING about a DirecTV door to door punk, I do know the facts and have the facts and was witness to his crimes. So therefore, I am not making an accusation, I AM STATING THE FACT and warning people of what I do know. Like or not, Facts are Facts.
i am sorry if you misunderstood my reply.i was not talking about you.or attacking you i was agreeing with you.

Uh Oh, now you have worried me about being an "Investigative Reporter". "Tell me more"??? You certainly did not take any notes from my posting #6 here in this thread. Take a few minutes, a deep breath and reread this for the answers to what you ask. Then do some research and tell us all what happened.

I shouldn't have you worried, your post was more recent and I had not read all the posts yet. My BAD. Anyhow, it is indeed the same company that presented in my county. I assume your meetings are recorded? I do not know how commissioners supported their vote, but will see if there is anything documented on that meeting. Thanks.

Are your CC articles going to be in the Union County News Leader or another newspaper? If another, which one? If in the UCL, will it be the same approx number of pages or will additional pages featuring CC issues be added?

Right now, its a test market. I do not have anything to do with these aspects of the newspaper. Number of pages is dependent upon the amount of advertising. Distributors will be announced this evening. Thanks

Selling your paper at the "Do Drop Inn" is akin to sleeping with the enemy. That's the "Good ol' Boy" restaurant. If you could get Doug Mullins at the Smoke Shop to sell your paper you'd be ahead in the game.
