FRANKFORT - Dozens of local law enforcement officers were among 183 from across the state honored at the 2008 Governor's Impaired Driving Enforcement Awards this month.

In Kentucky, 214 people were killed and more than 3,400 were injured last year in alcohol-related crashes, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said.

"These officers, their departments and agencies render a great service for public safety by targeting impaired drivers," said Transportation Secretary Joe Prather.

Three local officers ranked among the top three in their divisions:

Taylor Mill Police Officer Joe Wilder made 60 of the department's 103 drunken driving arrests during the past year, ranking second among departments of one to 10 officers.

Covington Police Officer Phouthakone Homphothichak made 67 of department's 226 arrests, ranking second among departments of 51 to 150 officers.

Boone County Sheriff's Deputy Mitch Kotzbauer made 74 of the department's 778 arrests, ranking third among departments of more than 150 officers.
