Starting Friday, more than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world will observe the month of Ramadan, fasting dawn until sunset. Fasting during this month is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and it is a form of worship. As outlined in the Quran, during the fast, Muslims abstain from food, drink and certain worldly pleasures of life. There is total submission for the command of almighty God. Islam, a flexible and accommodating religion, exempts the sick and infirm. Those who are traveling can postpone fasting and make it up later.

Ramadan requires a high dose of self-discipline. Muslims carry out their daily activities and business while engaging in intense worship. Questions have been asked how a person can remain alert and active while not having a single morsel or a drop of water for 16-18 hours.

There are many examples, whether it is Hakeem Olajuwon, basketball Hall of Famer, or the football team at Fordson High School in Dearborn, Mich. The team included many Muslim student athletes and they made it all the way to the state finals while fasting and playing during the month of Ramadan.

Muslims show acts of charity, granting forgiveness, purifying one’s behavior and doing good deeds. Fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing insight into the plight of the less fortunate. It also teaches us to be thankful and appreciative for bounties granted by God.

Ramadan is also a time of self-discipline, one of its most important facets. Since the fasting person is not preoccupied with food, water and worldly pleasures, a measure of ascendancy is given to the spiritual nature; it is a means of coming closer to God. It is an opportunity to gain by giving something up, to prosper by going without and to grow stronger by enduring weakness.

South Florida’s Muslim community is active in its outreach efforts to members of various faith based organizations; consequently, great strides to develop mutual respect have been achieved. South Florida Muslims will be holding open houses and will be sharing Iftar (breaking of the fast) with members of different clergy as well as law-enforcement and elected officials. These events will provide an excellent opportunity for Muslims and non-Muslims to break the ice and appreciate the bounties of the Almighty. The economic crisis has created a hardship for many families. Muslims will be reaching out to help those in need, regardless of their faith or ethnicity. We have been working with many groups to feed the homeless and provide free medical care to the needy.

Delusional? Arguably, religion is a mental illness..

Muslims are animals!! Their quran tells them to lie in order to look good and peaceable so they can win them over..They have nothing in common with any country other than muslim..They came here to undermine and destroy from the inside..They will change the demographics of the country and the political system..Keep on burying your heads in the sand, leaving your back/butts unprotected..

"I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tells them to." - Bill Cosby

Well some of us are tired of seeing Christians defend their actions in the name of "God" or "Jesus," such as racism, bigotry against many groups, the crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, making up a false trinity god --misleading 2 billion to break Gods #1 commandment on a daily basis, murder, hate crimes, genocide in the name of Jesus, Christian Militias in Malaysia, IRA in the United Kingdom, KKK burnings in America, etc. There are many militias running through north africa, mutilating children in the name of Christ. You may have heard of that American Christian, Bush, who approved the torture and murder of innocent people, and who dropped bombs on civilian neighborhoods and destroyed life-sustaining infrastructure. Violence by Christians in the United States has been responsible for attacks on Jewish centers, attempts to poison municipal water supplies, bombing of abortion clinics, and shooting of abortion providers. Timothy McVeigh’s bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City during 1995 killed 168 people, including 19 children. Do you know the extent of child molestation and abuse that goes on in so-called Christian households, not to mention sexual abuse of children by clergy? I could go on and on with examples of atrocities by Christians, and Jews as well. However I know that people who commit these actions are extremists, and in many cases quite delusional- they are not following the teachings of their faith in the way that they were meant to be taken. Organized religions, all of them, are full of contradictions and when we as humans try to interpret the original teachings or take them too literally, or say that our crimes are done in the name of our religion- that's just wrong.

Islam IS a religion of peace, when followed in it's true form. It's humans who twist the teachings around or blame their actions on their religion and/or culture who are to blame, just as in any other religion. You also have to take into consideration people's lack of education or understanding, or willingness to see the full story. Must muslims do not condone the behavior you have described above, but people who are ignorant and uneducated tend to enjoy to go on about the actions of extremists as if that is all there is to the religion.

Hey,Asaoud, have you read that quran you're upholding and the things written in it?? You can go on and on about Christianity, about this instance or that one..The BIBLE was written by word of GOD,not your allah..I am not ignorant..I get islam..The quran was written by a pervert and he took his own devious brain and evil to write it which he copied after the BIBLE..There are many educated experts teaching the biblical history,etc..Yes, I know you're going to say you have experts teaching islam..They are just teaching falsehood..Just as Naturally Wired has said(which he is right)you worship the cycle of the moon..You're moon worshippers!! Not GOD worshippers..Oh,another thing the Crusaders should have regrouped and gone again to destroy and we would not have this problem today!!

You're not here to assimilate into our love of freedom but to destroy us from within..You all need to go!!!And if there are Christians and pastors and such meeting with you then they have sold out their GOD..

Well I certainly don't care about their fastings and superstitions. I do care about the millions of Muslims who understand Islam justifies taking political power and killing.
Not all Muslims believe this but so many of them do that they are the reason there is no peace in countless countries today.
