DEA Inspects Oviedo Walgreens in Oxycodone probe
April 6, 2012
The Walgreens on Lockwood Boulevard in Oviedo was one of six stores in Florida served with a federal warrant this week, after agents noticed a huge jump in the amount of Oxycodone the store was ordering.
“I don’t think there’s any question about it that you have rogue pharmacies and rogue physicians,” Former FBI agent Brad Garrett said.
The Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed it is now investigating pharmacies from the nation’s biggest drugstore chain, Walgreens, including one in Oviedo on Longwood Boulevard.
According to published reports, the Oviedo Walgreens ordered about 80,900 Oxycodone pills in 2009. Two years later, the same store bought 1.7-million doses.
In February the DEA shut down two CVS stores in Sanford. It was the first time ever stores from a nationwide chain were shut down for dispensing too many potentially dangerous pills.
Agents said pharmacies ordered 20-times the national average when it came to Oxycodone pills. The DEA determined there was “Imminent danger to the public health.”
The DEA fears rogue pharmacies could be illegally filling prescriptions for greedy doctors involved in blackmarket distribution networks or selling painkillers directly to addicts.
“This is all about money. The sheer greed and the amount of money that’s made, which is in the billions of dollars,” Garrett said.
Officials from both CVS and Walgreens said they are cooperating with the DEA.
But, no mention in the report report here about A federal judge in the District of Columbia ruling Tuesday March 13th that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration can stop two Sanford CVS stores from selling controlled substances, and the instant intervention of an appeals court on Wednesday March 14th that blocked that move. Obviously CVS has protection from the Obama Administration! Why?

Appeals court halts DEA's efforts to block drug sales at Sanford CVS pharmacies
March 14, 2012
A federal judge in the District of Columbia ruled Tuesday that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration can stop two Sanford CVS stores from selling controlled substances, but an appeals court on Wednesday blocked that move.
The measures are the latest in the legal battle between the federal drug agency, which claims it is combating Florida's prescription drug epidemic, and the national pharmacy chain.
DEA issued immediate suspension orders against the CVS pharmacies on Orlando Drive and West First Street in early February, calling them an "imminent danger" to the public.
Federal authorities said CVS/pharmacy didn't have adequate measures in place to ensure prescriptions were legitimate at the two pharmacies, which ordered millions more oxycodone pills than the average pharmacy in the U.S.
CVS fought back, and asked a federal judge in the District of Columbia for a temporary restraining order against DEA that would block the enforcement of the ban. That request was granted Feb. 7.
CVS argued the two Sanford pharmacies voluntarily stopped dispensing oxycodone, one of the most abused drugs in Florida, and took other measures, including notifying 22 high-prescribing Central Florida doctors that the company would no longer fill their controlled substance prescriptions.
On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton dissolved the temporary restraining order, and also denied CVS's motion for a preliminary injunction against DEA.
CVS/pharmacy immediately filed an appeal, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Wednesday entered an administrative stay on DEA's immediate suspension orders, pending further order of the court.
