TAVARES -- Police are awaiting the results of forensics test to confirm the identity of the driver of a vehicle that burst into flames after running off the road and striking a utility pole early Friday morning.
The victim was burned beyond recognition in the single-vehicle accident on Dead River Road in Tavares, which occurred just before 2:20 a.m. Friday.
Police Capt. Danny Feleccia said the department has contacted the owners of the Chevrolet sport utility vehicle and believe the driver is a Tavares resident. He added they will not release the name until they can make a positive identification using the forensic results.
Feleccia didn't specify when the forensic results would be available.
He said the vehicle's single occupant likely lost consciousness upon impact, and was unable to escape the flames.
The victim had died by the time emergency services arrived.
Tavares Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Hosterman said his department received the call about 2:16 a.m., and were on the scene in three to five minutes.
"It was a horrific crash," Hosterman said.
Feleccia said it is not clear how long the vehicle was on fire before firefighters arrived.
Feleccia said dispatch had received calls of an explosion at the time of the accident, but it was an off-duty Mount Dora officer driving in the area who noticed the flaming wreck.
