Really? I was just thinking "How stupid are people these days, actually??"

Anyone who believed there was some value in collecting un-hygenic bottle caps needs a checkup from the neck up. I got this email from an educated neighbor who's got more heart than brains. What a dope. And so were you if you believed this.

Wow. I can't imagine how people take spam emails seriously. Unfortunately, I can see how people can take a restaurant's charity promotion seriously. Atlanta Bread must be run by idiots to actually promote a spam email.

The other scam is the aluminum can tab hoax. Sure, there are places that will donate money to a charity if you send them, but all they get is the scrap metal value. It costs more to ship them than they're worth.

While this may be a hoax, there are sometimes legitimate bottlecap and aluminum can tab charities.

Both kinds of collections aren't about the value of the physical materials. Haven't you ever seen box-top collections or soup-label collections? The companies who want to donate large amounts of cash want to (1) get their name out there, crowing how they care about their community, and (2) scale their actual donations to the level of interest in the community.

If they only get 85 marbles donated by kids to save the wild wumpus habitat, well, they see that the kids don't care about wumpuses, so the company will stop spending PR budget. If they get 250,000 six-pack rings to find a cure for the dorkimer simplex disease, the company will ride that wave and earn some goodwill by donating a lot of cash to the dorkimer simplex foundation. It's not about the actual marbles or the six-pack rings collected.

That's right, there aren't enough true victims of true crimes, that now people have to declare themselves "emotional victims".

For goodness sakes, you've been rooked at no expense, other than to feel a little foolish. Take the embarrassment of being easily fooled, laugh about it, and move on!

Where are your facts? While Snopes isn't perfect, no one shows any better information on this particular subject.

Like I said earlier, you're wasting your time and money sending can tabs. 100 tabs results in about 3 1/2 cents of scrap metal value for the charity. Both the charity and you will come out ahead if you take an envelope, put a dime in it, put a 43 cent stamp on, and mail it to the charity.

What sort of sick bastard would get pleasure out of pushing a scam like this, especially when there is no apparent financial benefit to him or her?

I'll see your link, indicating that one pound of aluminum can tabs (approximately 4,500 tabs) is worth fifteen cents (that's 300 tabs = one cent). And I'll raise you a few:

Save all the bottle caps and can tabs you want. There's still no cure for stupid.

By the way, for those who put the Judge It! icons to my comments made an incorrect assumption.

I was curious if there was an actual charity for bottlecaps and there was. Never said it was a good idea or if I would actually do it.

There's no cure for stupid assumptions either.
