This story is wasted time. Before you get all worked up about this teacher getting minors smashed it's not like that. He was drinking with a man that was 20 years old. They got the cops called and this is what the cops charged him with. At first glance at the News headline it appears he was proving alcohol to his students or something. Who hasn't ever drank a beer with a 20 year old? SaukValley newspaper probably just cost this man his career because they ran this non story. Sam Smith at [email protected] I hope your proud of this story. What a joke. Nice little witch hunt.

I agree! Sam Smith probly has a daughter that didn't get enough playing time on the basketball team , so he's pi ssed off! When I turned 18, I was legal to drink beer but not liquer. Then they changed the laws back to 21 again in the 1980's I think.

Your paper should have never pursued this story. Who hasn't drank beer with someone that was 20 years old. You wanted to sell papers so you used his career with children to sell papers. Your headline made it appear that he was providing alcohol to "real minors". His students. He is most likely going to lose his job because you ran this story. In a time when it's hard to find a job you just cost him his job and maybe his career. I hope he does not have family and children that depend on a paycheck. Maybe you can send them some money when times get tough. Yes you stated the facts of the arrest but this should have been in the fire and police reports section of your paper without the misleading headline. You intentionally sought out to wreck this man. Going as far as to contact the Superintendent and try to interview the Sheriffs. They would have never even known about the arrest if not for your "crack detective" work.

As of Friday afternoon, neither Thomas nor Fischbach had been charged with a crime, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office. Misdemeanor charges are expected to be filed on Monday.

Not even charged with a crime yet and all this attention.

“We are committed to ensuring that our students remain in a safe environment,” Girard said.“The first step is to determine the facts.... Everyone is entitled to due process.”

He got drunk with his buddy,(adult 20 male) got to rowdy got arrested and now the children of Morrison are in danger when they go to school with Mr. Thomas. This is boarder line tabloid trash.

I gotta say, I think the coach was stupid. You guys can go on about "Who hasn't drank with a 20 year old" but the fact is that when you become a teacher you know you have to watch yourself. he knew that ANY trouble he got in having anything to do with underage anything would be a huge deal and might cost him his job, and he bought beer for the guy anyway. It's a reflection on his judgment. Sure it's common, but he chose a profession where that kind of thing would bite him in the @ss and then he went and did it. Maybe it shouldn't bite him, but he knew it would. In my opinion, it's not the "crime" that is so bad as the fact that he knew the possible outcome and still did it.

How do you know he bought the beer. This guy may be his friend and could have shown up drinking beer and carrying a 30 pack of beer. The Adult 20 year old is responsible for making the right choices. The teacher is not liable for anything, true he used bad judgement but some people do when they have been drinking. If the 20 year old was not an adult and was 17 then the teacher is liable. What the teacher did was wrong and got arrested for being too wild. My big thing is that the headline of the story was misleading and very damaging to his career.
The 20 year old was arrested for underage consuption.
"Charles Fischbach, 20, of Sterling, was arrested for underage consumption of alcohol after an investigation by deputies on the scene, according to the sheriff’s statement."
The headline reads:
"Teacher charged with delivering alcohol to minor"
Later in the article it reads:
"neither Thomas nor Fischbach had been charged with a crime, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office. Misdemeanor charges are expected to be filed on Monday."
Another paper reported:
"Morrison High School varsity golf and girls basketball coach, Benjamin P. Thomas, was arrested early Friday in connection with a domestic disturbance and underage drinking incident at his Tampico home."
At least the second article got it right. A "domestic disturbance" and underage drinking incident".
It was not fair for the SVN reporter to write that the teacher was charged with delivery alcohol to a minor. It appeared to me in the SVN story that it contradicts what really happened. I know teacher's in some peoples world are some kind of elected official or robot. But to me they are human and drink beers with adults. Maybe the 20 year old was drinking with him at bar before hand with a fake i.d.. I'm not here to pass judgement. There are over paid judges that do that. I feel he was wrongfully persecuted in the newspaper. The facts were not out. Charges weren't filed at the time. Domestic disturbance and the 20 year old underage drinking. Reread the article and tell me if you arrested and charges had not be filed yet but the next morning it reads you were charged with something that you weren't charged with, that you would not be upset. It's too late now and the newspaper pointed everyone in one direction on this guy before the facts were out.

My daughter lived in this house in Tampico with Ben Thomas. She came home to Ben partying with several underage kids.He had a 17 yr.old girl sitting on his lap.the other kids including the u nderage girl who were all drinking with this moron ran out of the house. They got away before the sheriif deputy came.My daughter called the cops.Ben was constantly partying with his students. He recently was arrested in Bloomington,Ill. for DUI and possesion of marijuana . And he still is teaching. Now he is just teaching JR High School Kids.Is He partying with them too? This asshole should never be allowed to teach again..
