Like other similar stories, I checked a box to receive a free trial for Prevention Magazine. I received that one trial and nothing else. Since I decided not to subscribe, I ignored bills sent to me. Yesterday I received a letter from North Shore stating that Prevention had not received payment for the magazines "you ordered and they shipped to you." I tried calling North Shore Agency for 15 minutes straight over and over and got a busy signal, which made me wonder if anyone ever gets through. I looked online and saw these letters about their unfair and deceptive practices, so I called Prevention. The woman I spoke with said she would cancel my "subscription" and refund only half the money becuase I've already received the magazines since February. I told her no, I had not and if they were not refunding my money I at least want the magazines, so they are suppose to send them. She also said she would take me off the list for North Shore Agency and that it would not impact my credit rating. I am going to order a credit report in a month or so to make sure.

Also received a letter from NSA for Sherman's Travel. I called their direct # 800-807-2734; their representative quickly gave me a cancellation # and offered apologies for any inconvenience.
In the end, I agree with the sentiment that this is a deceptive way of doing business. I would be interested in finding out if there is anything to be done to end this.

received a "collection bill" from North Shore Agency, Inc. for US WEEKLY, which I have never received or ordered. Phone number on bill didn't answer, finally got another 800 number during business hours, it only has an answer phone. Wonder if they are trying to steal identity or something.

Received collection letter today from North Shore Agency for a Playstation Mag subscription that I never ordered or received. Got one free issue with a PS3 months ago, nothing more. Unable to get through to anyone. Have contacted Playstation Magazine via their website and will write a letter. If this can affect credit scores, this company and PS should be the subject of a class action lawsuit.

Just got my letter yesterday from North Shore. Did not renew my subscription to Runner's World, but apparently they renewed it for me! A call to the company cleared it up immediately (they apologized and canceled my "supposed subscription"), but the business practice of threatening a former good customer with debt collection to keep being a customer it pretty low. They (Runner's World and all of Rodale's magazines) will never get my business again! Luckily, the info on the back of the North Shore letter was pretty helpful on how to report bad business practices to the FTC!

I received a "Request For Payment" letter from North Shore today. I have been fighting thi stupid thing for a while. Sherman's Travel has tried to bill me for a non-existent subscription. I wrote on their bill that I did not order the subscription the first time that they sent me a bill. The next time I heard from them was to request payment again and this time to offer me a longer subscription at a reduced price. I wrote them telling them "no thank you" and that I did not request the first subscription. I also asked that they stop billing me. Now I have this thing from North Shore Agency. I have called Sherman's Travel and told them again that I did not order a subscription and to call off this "Agency". Their representative apologized for the mix up and, after requesting information from the agency's letter, assured me that it would be taken care of. We'll see...

I recieved a letter in the mail today from "North Shore Agency, Inc." (A National Collection Agency, 270 Spagnoli Road, Suite 111, Melville, NY). They say they're "STATEMENT OF RECOVERY" is on behalf of Publishers Clearing House....evidently they think I ordered a "Long handled soap dispenser" for $20.45. Are you KIDDING?!?! So, I know that I didn't purchase anything (ever) from Publishers Clearing House, and I most definitely didn't waste twenty dollars on a soap dispenser...
The question much of a scam is this? Should I call to dispute or wait until the letters stop coming? Just in case they are scamming me (or a "mistake" has been made), what information should I not share with them?
Any insight would be wonderful.

North Shore Agency is committing mail fraud - period. They get subscriber lists of people who have expired magazine subscriptions, then send them bogus "collection" notices.
Of course it rings true to the recipient - they recall getting the magazines. Then they question whether they actually paid, and some send in the money. This is what North Shore is counting on. All they need is a small response, and they rake in millions.
Report this mail fruad to your nearest post office. These people need to be shut down.

Note that there is no way to contact these Bozos on their web site ( ). I worked in collections for 5 years - I can tell that the one this collectors DO WANT is to talk to you. No way is this NSA legit - it's totally bogus.

File complaints of mail fraud.

Received a notice from North Shore Agency saying they were collection company and wanting $14.97 they said I owed for a subscription to Archaeology Magazine. I had a subscription that I paid for but did not wish to renew so I did not renew after renewal notice came. This notice is fraud! It's their way of bullying someone to get another year of subscription money. Unsuspecting people would pay this thinking that they really owe when they do not. They give no phone number or email/web address to contact them - just an address. They do not want to make it easy to contact them. It would be easier to pay them the small amount they ask for and they know it. No reputable magazine would extend a subscription without it being paid for up front. I have filed a complaint with the US Postal Service.

I too received a letter from North Shore Agency. After calling the magazine's 800 number, and you'll notice all the complaints deal with magazines, it seems I had an automatic renewal set up. First, I don't remember setting up this auto renewal. At any rate, the renewal was probably using a credit card that the bank canceled months ago due to suspicious activity. When the renewal came up it didn't go through and they just send it to NSA. So in my case there is an ounce of validity to the letter. I canceled the subscription right then. I enjoyed the magazine for the last three years and would have probably renewed if it was handled differently. Bully tactics are a PR bomb.

I also noticed the **TRW** on the letter from NSA. This is an obvious attempt to lead me to believe that it was reported to TRW. When I questioned this the representative informed me that they were NOT a reporting company and it was NOT reported. She also said a letter of cancellation would be sent to me and NSA.

we also received a notice from these scam artists for shutterbug. we had received 3 issues when the subscription ran out and felt we owed for those 3 and paid for it, only to receive another notice from these idiots a month later saying we still owed the balance. we called the magazine, who said that instead of cancelling this, it re-activated the subscription. they were going to call them and refund us the money we paid for the 3 issues we did not request. people, this constitutes mail fraud, these people are bogus...send in a complaint to the us postal service to investigate. this is a federal offense and can result in jail time if they can catch them. from what i'm seeing they move around quite a bit.

I received a notice from NSA regarding my World War II magazine. I called the magazine and they confirmed that they did use NSA. Told them to remove the bill and be glad to know that I will not ever renew a subscription with them even though I did like the mag.
