I just got a collection letter for Prevention Magazine from North Shore Agency. I phoned the Prevention Magazine number provided on the letter and sure enough, Prevention says I owe them $15.97. If I do, they renewed the subscription without my knowledge. The last I had anything to do with them was over 2 years ago.

I have received two letters regarding a Golf for Women subscription I didn't renew. My opinion of this magazine has dropped drastically because of their use of this bogus collection agency to get renewals people don't want.

Received an invoice dated 1-16-08 for a bit less than $15 for ESPN magazine. My teenage son subscribed to this a year or two ago, and had fully paid. The magazine sent the usual appeals to renew, but he chose not to renew. There was no reason for us to pay much attention to the matter until the recent letter. The letter states the following:
"It is also an opportunity letter--and we offer the following opportunities...Opportunity to settle this account in the amount of$XXXX before further collection activity becomes necessary. Opportunity to reinstate your subscription...and to receive the remaining issues in your original subscription offer." Is my only choice to dispute via regestered mail? It's terribly unfair that I have to waste so much time on what is obviously a scam!

Just got billed by North Shore for debt "collection" of a $21.97 Old House Journal subscription. Suspected fraud/scam and this web site confirms it. Thanks folks.

Yep, seems like the summer of 2007 kept Prevention & NSA very busy. I too got 1 copy of the mag.last july or august, figured it was a 'freebie' & forgot about it. Threw out the first bill, wrote CANCEL & wasted a stamp on the next one,@ the 3rd or 4th sent an email that dammit I can't find now & then just gave up 'cuz they kept pestering me with invoices saying I was IGNORING them!! Oh & btw - I never received another magazine, either.
And now I have the red collection notice from NSA - aren't they busy enough fighting the lawsuit filed against them??

I was sent a box with nothing but my address and no return address. It contained 3 books and nothing else(puzzling). A couple of weeks went by and I received mail saying if I didn't want the books or subscription, to write that on the bill and return the books by the 21st. The letter was postmarked 20th. We sent it back with the books and written request to cancel. 2 weeks later I received a collection notice from North Shore Agency demanding payment of $24.94 claiming that Men's Health magazine had sent me NUMEROUS letters trying to collect but that I ignored all of them. I hadn't received even 1 letter for collection, let alone "numerous" letters. This is an obvious SCAM. I have investigated North Shore Agency and their site they have a settlement from the court for reported scam collections. They say it was unscrupulous former employees. My question is if they are former employees then are there active employees continuing the scam? obviously so. the settlement Prevents them from any business in New Jersey. I say it' time to make another class action lawsuite.

If you need to reach North Shore Agency Corporate. Please call 1-800-676-4660 and speak with a supervisor. If you have a concern on why the file was placed with North Shore Agency please call the actual magazine subscriber or company whom sent the file to North Shore.

I recieved a collection letter for Prevention Magazine from North Shore Agency. I never order it. Pay this amout:$16.94. Called 9 numbers for the company to try to speak to a rep. Numbers are no longer in use. When I did speak to someone in SALES he said he would make sure to forward my call to clear up the matter. DIAL TONE! Is Prevention in with North Shore on this too?

I just received a phishing letter from North Shore Company demanding payment for an expired subscription to PCPhoto. Following is the email I sent to the publishers who may be selling their customer info to this unscrupulous company:

"Whoever you are selling your information to is sending me threatening collection letters concerning my former subscription to PCPhoto. North Shore Agency is the name of the firm, and if you ever expect me to subscribe to ANY of Werner Publications again you will do something about this scam. If you think that I am going to respond to a collection agency (for God's sake!!!) about a subscription renewal you are very, very, mistaken. Unless you tell me you read this I will make sure to post online wherever I can about scammy practices related, via this lowlife company, to Werner Publications.

I am also reporting North Shore Agency to the Better Business Bureau, Ripoff Report, and any other agency of that sort I can find. These people are the scum of the earth.

I have been a reader of PCPhoto, Outdoor Photgrapher, and Digital Photo Pro for many years. But if this is the way your customers are treated, you can count me and anyone I can convince, out (and I am very persuasive).

I hope that Time, Inc. reads these comments. I have 3 subscriptions that were all paid in full for one year which I did not renew. I just received a notice from North Sore Agency, Inc. for $42 stating "You know right from wrong David. Do what is right and clear your delinquent account." Well I called Time, Inc. and was told that all of my subscriptions had run out and there was now an "open order" that I owed on. Although my account balance was zero.(I'm not getting any magazines) Now since I did not renew, Time sends a former good customer a collection notice then when one pays the bogus collection company you start getting magazines that you did not want. I find this to be a very unethical practice and Time, Inc. has lost at least this customer. David

A direct phone I actually got a live person was five one six-two nine three-zero six seven three. I was given options for people and selected customer service and got someone. I wonder how these people sleep at night and if it went against my credit score. They said they don't report it to any agency.
Call the magazine they say you owe. Get varification you don't and then call and tell them you don't per the publisher. They said they will remove me from their lists. I'll wait to see if I get anymore notices.

I also recieved a collection from NSA for Prevention Magazine. It was sent to my parents house for a subscription issued in December 2007. The funny thing is, I moved out of my parents house several months before. There are also no debts listed on my credit report, so I don't think I need to even pay it!

Yes, i got the same thing and its definitely a scam. If you read the back of the statement it says "Unless you, within 30 days after your receipt of North Shore Agency's initial written notice to you concerning this debt, notify this office that you dispute the validity of this debt, or any portion thereof, North Shore Agency will assume this debt is valid."
It also states that you must notify them in writing. Who uses written mail any these days??
QUESTION IS: What can we all do about this now?? Apparently the Better Business Bureau isnt enough to get anything done. What ever someone thinks we can do, IM IN !!!!!!

Oh, to add to comment above, we live in Santa Rosa, CA...not Oakland. Just thought I'd mention that for demographic interest only. And I failed to mention that this amount was also for magazines we never ever ordered, requested, ever subscribed to, not even interested in...MONEY was one of them and we even received them in the mail prior to the bill. Of course we were puzzled. Then the demand for payment came. Swindlers.
