MY ADVICE DO NOT DO BUSINESS HERE!!! Just a warning to anyone looking to purchase a used car from this dealership. We purchased a vehicle on a payment plan. We have made every payment and recently paid off the vehicle. Guess what they will not send us the TITLE? Their excuse is it is in the mail. They never believed me when I said that to them about my payment. All I can say is unbelievable and horrible business, have reported Bay Gulf Imports to the BBB, Attorney General and DVM.

I entered into a car loan with Bay Gulf Imports (a buy-here, pay here used auto dealer)in May of 2011. After the first month or so, I set up automatically biweekly payments through my bank’s bill pay service. All payments on my loan, under the retail contract agreement have been paid on time without miss. The most recent payment was deducted on 9/28/2012. My vehicle was repossessed on 10/3/2012. Bay Gulf claims that I have not been paying my car payment. I have proof of each cleared check paid through my bill pay service on the dates agreed upon under my contract. I have never received a call or notice about this issue. I learned yesterday when I called that they took it upon themselves to apply the payments for my loan towards a side note for a repair done in February of 2012. These two should have been completely separate.
Regarding the side note:
In February of 2012, my engine blew due to what I learned was an oil leak that was never disclosed to me. Bay Gulf offered to place a used engine in the car for $3000 and allow me to pay out the amount separately from my car loan. It was either that or I pay for a car I can’t drive. My car payment continued to be deducted as usual and I called in to make credit card payments towards the side note. After a couple of months, the car started over heating and when I drove it into a service center, they advised me that there was no oil in the car and it was seconds away from the engine blowing again. I was not due for an oil change at that time so I knew it was not a lack of maintenance on my part. I learned that the leak still existed (in engine oil pan) after the engine was replaced, which indicated that either they did not actually replace the engine and/or its related parts or they did it incorrectly. I had to make sure oil was put in weekly and problems with the car continued to pile up.
Due to the unpredictability of the vehicle and Bay Gulf’s refusal to help me, I had to purchase another car. At that time, I stopped paying on the side note, but continued with on time payments on the car loan. Although I didn’t feel it was fair, I fully expected Bay Gulf to take collection action on the remaining balance of the side note $1,600. A phone call nor letter was received from Bay Gulf and if I wanted receipts for payments, I had to call in and request them, which I did every few months or so.
Without my knowledge or authorization, Bay Gulf took it upon themselves to pay the side note rather than the car loan. As a result and to my surprise, my loan was not being paid, even though payments were still coming out of my account. Subsequently, my car was repossessed.
When I called yesterday, they refused to send me any paperwork or allow me to get my property from the car without a written request.
The retail agreement and repossession agreement speaks to default only under the “retail installment contract” and makes no mention (as far as I can tell) of using the vehicle as collateral for the side note.
These people have been taking advantage of me since the day I purchased the car.
