I recently went through the toll and got a ticket. I got off at the last exit to take photos, then jumped on 18. I NEVER saw a sign that I could recall. They did not listen to my story-just took my money in that PIERCE COUNTY THIEVING BASTARDS way they did. Just another evil thing to come out of Pierce County.

So do you live in a cave that you hadn't heard that they were charging tolls for the bridge? It's been in the news forever and if you're really that oblivious then you have bigger problems than getting a well-deserved traffic ticket. Stop blaming Pierce County and pull your head out of your ass.

If they had to put up 16 new signs, I must not be the only one that had the problem of not seeing the sign...DOUCHE BAG.

Be adviced that in order to renew your drivers license you will now be required to provide the License examiner with approved medical records indicating you are not blind. The examiner will also want to see that you have at least completed a GED education and are literate enough to read.

One last comment...if the previous posting moron can read, I got off the last exit before the bridge to take photos of the bridge. I truly do not recall seeing a sign. As far as blaming Pierce County, it is basicly a shit hole that doesn't flush correctly. I am down with deadbeat, douche bag!
Yes, I do live in a cave. I am banging on a gorilla and it looks like your mother.
I was trying to figure out how you got off at the last exit before the bridge and ended up on Hwy 18 in King County. Worm hole? Rip in the space-time continuum? Whatever. I can read, but apparently you can't type or read a map (or a sign for that matter).

And BTW, gorillas don't live in caves.

We were driving in the far left lane... GoPass sign said left lane so we got over a lane, now in the middle, its raining, traffic on all sides, next thing we see is a cement divider on our right... then a look ahead we see toll booth over the right another lane. No chance to move over and we were forced to go thru GoPass. Now we have a ticket for $49 for a $3 missed toll. A little research about the bridge and TransCore, the company in charge of ticketing, has charged the state 13 million (up from 9.5 mil. in orginal contract) for toll development and has increased its earnings from 14mil for a two year contract to 18mil., and I soon realize this is a fraudulent scam to bilk money out of travelers. Our only option is to pay fine or take a day off work and drive up to dispute. A fair charge is Toll plus a reasonable fine of maybe 10 or 15 dollars not $49. TransCore is abusing it's government contract. I do not break the law for habit or intentionally. The barrier is too far from the toll booth which makes transferring lanes impossible once the mistake is made. We realized we were in the wrong lane about 200 ft before we passed the photo ticket contraption. That is entrapment. It's illegal and wrong and not a sign of a state who has it's citizens safety at interest. Our only option was to slam on the brakes and back up. I've driven thru toll booths across the country from Chicago, Indiana, New Jersey even in New Orleans but I have never seen a more blatant use of corralling for fines.

I totally agree with "out of stater". This was my first time using the bridge. I got the $49 fine to help pay for the bridge…I guess. I was in the left lane and expecting the tollbooth to come up soon. In fact, I had $5 in my hand. Unfortunately, by the time I realized I was in the wrong lane, it was too late to move over. I would of had to pull to the side and back up. I saw the tollgates on the right, looked up and saw a sign that said something about oversize vehicles. I’ve driven in California, Florida, Japan and many other places and I’ve never seen a tollgate that you have to exit the highway in order to pay. They should have the word’s “PREPAID ONLY” painted in the left lanes. Yes, I saw lots of signs about a toll ahead. In fact, I remember the first one said something about Toll 10 Miles ahead…it did not say anything about having to exit the highway. I’m going to research to see how much they are collecting in fines and who gets the money. Obviously, they are counting on fine collections as a source of revenue.

I'm another innocent victim of this toll-gate scam.
It was my first and LAST time ever to go accross the bridge.
I was innocently picking a friend up in Bremerton in a terrible rainstorm in late January.
Visibility was very bad, and we did not see any signs alerting that there was a toll gate to be passed.
As we were driving through very strong wind and rain, we saw the gates on our far right, but there was no way we could get back there from where we were, nor any kind of sign that said we should be all the way over there.
Apparently, the road we were driving on was the "gopass" lane.

As with "out of stater" and "first time on bridge" above, the mistake was unintentional, and the Pierce County Court made it basically impossible to plead our innocence: I didn't recieve any notice about this citation until mid March, and by that time it was at a final warning to suspend my license!!!

I was up there about a month ago & missed the Jackson Ave exit, went across the bridge & got off on the first exit to turn around & go back. I didn't notice any signs that said I needed to go to the next exit & then turn around so that I could pay a toll. There are some signs that say "Good to go", but not being from the area I assumed they were advertising some local hangout.
I sent a letter explaining my circumstances to the Pierce County District Court & offered to pay the toll. I received a form letter stating I'll have to pay the $49 fine instead.
What a racket, the spirit of Al Capone lives on in Pierce County.

I accidentaly crossed the bridge going west, realized it was a mistake and took the first exit off the bridge. I turned around before even getting to the toll and made it back across, i got a ticket for not paying a toll when i never went through the toll booth, it was about a half a mile up the road.

On our first trip across the bridge I had my wife get three dollars ready for the toll, next thing I know I'm on the bridge. Of course I too received the $50 fine. I appealled and lost.

I am from Seattle and had the same problem as Another first timer,Swillabrew,And Another, and First time on bridge. I work in Tacoma but had never been on the bridge before. I was looking for signs and apparently there is one tiny sign on the 24th ST onramp. I was looking for a booth that everyone passes through like the ones in New Jersey. I was freaking out because there wasn't one and there was no where to pay. I went to court and there were a whole bunch of other people with the same problem. The judge took out a book to show me where the sign "might have been" but admitted, "it depends on where you are coming from" as to the size and visibility of the signs. This was old hat to her and she seemed apologetic but said she could only lower the fine to $37. It is just plain unfriendly to travelers. I could see a $15 fine but even a parking ticket only costs $15. Why can't they waive it for 1st time offenders who can prove that they don't live in Gig Harbor? It really makes me mad.

I heard the toll is now $4. If that is so, accidental toll evaders like myself would understand the mistake and promptly pay a fine of 4 or 5 times the actual toll.$16-20 is reasonable.$49 collected on every out of state driver is clearly the intention of the county. It can't be legal. If you are angry like me joing my facebook group "Victims of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Toll scam" Someone has to fight for the rights of out-of-towners.

i just moved here from boston and i was in the line for the toll, but then i thought the toll was for gettin of exit 8 (that's how it is in MA sometimes) so i went over the bridge and now have a $52 ticket. i don't find it clear either, maybe for people who live here and know the area.
