There is no way this should unduly strain Afghanistan-USA relations as this sort of thing happens in wars, and the Afghans of all peoples know this all too well.
According to latest report, SSG Bales has been charged.
Atrocities have happened in every war since the Ice Age and there is nothing unique about this incident if it happened as posited by the media.
The Taliban has committed numerous atrocities and genocides and the Afghans have a culture of revenge killings and blood feuds, so this is not going to be outside the bounds of human experience.
The trial, if conducted fairly and properly, will go a long way to restoring the USA's image of a nation that respects the rule of law, and may be used as a teaching tool for Afghan prosecutors and judiciary.
If he did commit the atrocity, then It will be interesting to see if SSG Bales acted alone and if his mental state may have been under the influence of legally prescribed or illegal drugs, whether he was subject to drug spellbinding, or automatism, or reduced capacity due to Traumatic Brain Injury or PTSD or combinations thereof.
