Anybody know what happened to HGH and the nursing home? It was located at 800 Front Street. Both me and my mother worked there,in fact my mom worked there for over 25 years as a nurse.First on 4 south in the hospital and later on 2 north in the nursing home.I worked in the engineering dept for a number of years. The chief engineer was Andrew Dina and I worked with guys like,James Dunphy,Casper Lewis,Al Wenesh,John Clavens,Jimmy Jones,Fred Paas,Vincent Murtha.Anybody know any of these people or why the place closed? I have alot of fond memories of working there. Can anyone relate to that?

Not sure why it closed, but the site may be used for a proposed "NuCare" facility to serve uninsured and underserved populations.

I left HGH in 1979 - after 14 years - started out working for Charlie Hackett and then Bill St. George - then promoted to Personal Manager. I knew Andy - still close friends with Barbara O'Donnell (who worked for Charlie, after I was promoted.) I remember pretty much everyone - Mrs. Levinson, Dir, of Nursing - Marion Phipps; Stephanie Perez, Administration; Winifred Davis, X-Ray - all of the doctorss - Stapen, Rieger, Rabinski - let's talk some more. Barbara and I were actually in Hempstead a few years ago - hospital was closed and boarded (very sad)I could see my old office - but NH is still open - we walked over to talk with them and apparently Stapen is still in charge and comes in frequently. The hosptial was closed in 1999 I believe. The nursing home is still open for buisness and located at the same address. 800 front street Hempstead NY. Some of the old time staff that are still here are J.LYN and M. Morse. If you have any old time photo's please send them so we can post them in the lobby.

We were back in LI in 2005 and stopped by the NH to say hi. I worked at the hospital from for 14 years - moved to Colorado in 1979; I don't have any pictures but it would be fun to hear from you.

I worked at Hempstead General and Hempstead Park in the early '80's...first as a nursing assistant, then as a Graduate Nurse and finally as an R.N. I worked the night shift and I have some very wonderful memories. I'm so sad to know the hospital closed. It was the beginning of my 25+ years of nursing.

Hi, Kathleen..........finally someone answered me. I left in 1979; I, too, have wonderful memories. You probably knew a lot of the people I did - like Dr. Stapen (I know he still comes in to the NH to visit. Also, Mrs. Levensen, Stephanie Perez, Marjorie Phipps, RN., Tess Hotoph, Belle Rudulph; some of the doctors I remember - Dr. Richard Rieger; Dr. Jerome Schwartz; Dr. Robert Rabinowitz; anyway..........these are just a few - Some of them might be gone (in one way or another); When I first came to CO in 1979 I wanted to still work in a hospital -but there were no jobs and the salary was horrible. So I went to work for Siemens Corp (the manufacturing end) in a sales offic - I was there for 25 years and retired a few years ago (well actually, the company changed and they let of people - they "retired me" due my job being discontinued. I tried so hard to get a part time job but couldn't. Finally - last summer I got a job working for 2 Neurologists where my sister works..........it's just archieving, pulling charts; filing - and I love it. It's 1 - 1 1/2 day per week and it works out fine for me. Let's chat again and see how many people we remember. Sandy

I worked at HGH and Hempstead Park in the 80's...first as a nursing assistant, then as an RN. Ms Harriet Rosenthal was our Director of Nursing. I was a float as a nursing assistant and as an RN, then was staffed in ICU (always worked 11-7). I remember my first night working as the only nurse in the ER (New Year's Eve, no less!). I have wonderful memories of HGH...I learned SO MUCH from everyone there!

I, too have wonderful memories of HGH. I left in 1979; don't remember Harriet Rosenthal but I do remember that a man named Rosenthal, I think was Director of the Nursing Home. Marian Phipps was Director of Nursing at HGH. So nice to hear from you. I did get in touch with Bill St. George about 3 yrs ago - I worked for him as Secretary and then took over his job as Personnel Manager. Bill now works, or did work, at St. James Nursing Home.

I worked at Hempstead General in the ICU from Sept 1969 to 1973...a new RN grad...In fact, the day I started was the opening of their new ICU....There was a sign on the door that read " Roses are red, violets are blue, so save some lives in our new ICU".....It was the beginning of a long Critical Care career....I remember Dr. Treitler(sp?)(surgeon), Mrs. La Rue (supervisor) Mrs. LaRocca (supervisor) Dr. Robert Rabinowitz (Cardiologist)..Brenner, Berstein and Rabinowitz....
It was an 8 bed ICU....We had a wonderful staff
