I think it needs a complete overhaul. What are your thoughts?

yes i agree...i think it needs to start at the high school too! The first thing would be get rid of Jimmy Cleveland and Jay Grissom! Then a brand new school board. Well probably have to get rid of school board first to get rid of the other two. Jimmy C. acts like he has more authority than Jay. Well he maybe does, he holds 3 titles out there. Athletic director, assistant principal, and head basketball coach. Should hold the title of head a$$hole! I think they forget that we (tax payers) pay their paychecks! If you think its bad in youth sports, just wait until high school!! it only gets worse! I had always heard that and never believed it until my kids went there! Not everyone has a bad experience but a majority does. I just can't understand why there hasn't been more outrage. I wish people would get fired up! Speak out!

My kids are older and out of high school. I know who Mr. Cleveland and Mr. Grissom are, but have not dealt with them personally. But, I have gone through the mess called youth football and it was a nightmare. My son was at every practice and worked hard. He wasn't the best player by any means but he was there nonetheless. When we complained about him not getting any play time we were approached by a deputy who told us we would be asked to leave if any more comments were made. But, my son played several downs after that.

ALL parents pay the money, sell raffle tickets, buy merchandise and pay to get into the games. ALL children should be allowed equal playing time but, especially if they show up to practice and work hard. I know many good players who never stepped foot on the field. They were disheartened and many of them hate football today - my son included. What are they learning when all are made to practice the same but only a select few get to play in the game?- Nothing!

It has needed a complete overhaul for years now. However, that will never happen as long as the board members vote themselves in! The parents should be the ones to vote in the board!! We are in effect the "shareholders" for youth sports, yet we have no say in who sits on that board!! They all vote in their spouses, cousins and friends. That makes one wonder what they are up to that they don't want anyone outside their circle to know about!

All the kids need play time! The board needs to be elected by the parents and there needs to be full financial disclosure!! Things that many of us have asked for for many years now! When they let an accused felon (now a convicted felon) stay on the board and finish the season there's a BIG problem! And now the presidents own wife is charged with embezzlement of almost $150,000!

I could go on and on about the things I have seen going on with youth sports over the past 8 years. I don't know how to get it changed. We have contacted the league president in the past and he does nothing! Acts like the parents are crazy for having any concerns.

It would take a massive effort and enough parents pitching a fit to get anything changed. A petition is a good idea but the whole community needs to be involved. Who is the contact above Mr Crawford? There are serious problems that need to be addressed on a much higher level.

Believe me, going to a "higher level" does not even work! They are all in it together! It will take a new school board! someone to replace Sue Nations!! I really don't even know why the Crawfords were involved in youth sports, didn't their children grow up? Its gonna take parnets getting involved! As you said pitching a fit, but you will have to have lots of them backing you! It will take good coaches that care about the kids, and not just winning, teaching them how to be a team, and to me a team is like family!, something that has not been taught in a long time! Teach these kids how to be a team and the winning will come! I understand the part about your kids not getting fair amount of playing time, been there, but if it is their first year, it will come. I dunno, Jackson County has been loosing momentum for some time now and it is such a shame! I kept hoping it would come back, but it seems to be getting worse! good luck with youth sports, but like i have said before, if you think its bad now, just wait!!!! and if nothing is done about Cleveland football maybe won't even exist by the time your kids get there, because basketball is all he cares about!

The school board has nothing to do with youth sports. Pete Mccoy in Cherokee is the league president. Good luck if you contact him though. I haven't seen him take any action..ever!

Mrs. Danner's petition is a good idea. If enough parents sign it and show up at the meetings, someone will have to pay attention. My kids are too old for youth sports also, but I still care about the kids who participate. They are our future and they deserve the chance to play and participate regardless of their skills.

Then how come the youth sports uses the school fb field and baseball fields to play and practice on? If it comes right down to it, yes they do!

I believe they may pay a fee to use the field or are granted permission to do so but, as far as I know the School Board has no say in what goes on in youth sports. Youth sports is simply using their facilities.

His name is David Mccoy. The President of all youth. A petition sounds like a great idea. I think he may listen. If there is enough fuss about it someone will listen. 13wlos? That might get there butts in gear. Missing money? WLOS often reports on that topic. Renting out a community building to have a parents of allyouth and ex youth players should be welcome at this meeting. Everything needs to be documented and taking to every newspaper in the area, the local tv news station and the board. Its time for parents to make a stand.

Just so you all know the posts on here by wncmom are mine too. I had forgotten that I had registered another name and started a new one. Can anyone help me organize some parents? I plan to take this on full force if I can get some back up from other parents. They have gotten away with this for far too long!! My husband and I have already discussed contacting papers and wlos.

I would start by talking to Mr. Mccoy. Maybe even making a facebook page. See how many people you can get on your side. Publish something in sylva herald. Make a contact email. Thats a good start I think

Our H.S football has suffered since 1989. Does anyone else remember the greatest football coach that Sylva ever had? Charles "Babe" Howell, he didn't care about the financial or social status of the kids or parents. If you wanted to play football, then he would find a way for even the poorest of children to participate. Maybe that was part of the reason he was the winningest football coach in the state of NC! Long live the "BABE"!

I should have said 1990. It was the summer of 1990 when our "wonderful" schoolboard did their dirty deed to the "BABE"!

Thats the way it should be and the way it would be if you are truly there for the kids!

"If there is a mutual respect between players and coaches, that keeps the team honest and makes for a very healthy environment which in turn promotes other important qualities such as work ethic, integrity and a positive atmosphere for competing and winning."
