Google environmental disaster in China, and then look at how walmart and other retailers who buy from China are contributing to the pressure to provide cheap goods. It is not difficult to see the relationship that exists between low prices here and their suppliers overseas taking advantage of lax pollution controls, cheap labor, and such factors. Walmart is not inherantly evil, but reflects the social demand for cheap goods fueled by a disposable society making bad decisions one after another.

WMT will be a service to Franklin...the center now...offers nothing at all with the exception of the grocery store... the chinese restaurant has nothing...rude people...food is bad..and I understand they are the ones that say MY BUSINES will suffer if they left...Baloney...this is AMERICA not CHINA. They hire associates at minimum wage/no benefits/less than 35 hours, run mom and pops out of business and send 98% of profits back to Arkansas. The only thing that goes up when Wal-Mart comes is sales tax revenue to the county and state (there's money well spent!). Then they decide things like we won't sell this or that and there is nothing we can do by then. Wal-Mart yields way too much power...investigate further.....ask Compaq, Black & Decker, Sony, Panansonic, etc. what Wal-Mart has done for them long term....

Boy, you got this right.......especially the wage. Even if your manage to last for the 7th year...then 100 percent invested...which only means that if you leave on day 2 of the 7th year...you may have some money(if the stocks you bought out of your pay check are up)..to have for a little while.Did you know, that even the managers make just a bit more?Yep. With all the headache 24/7. Also, if you go out on short term leave...say surgery.....you still have to have 28 hrs a week or you can not have enough to pay the cobra insurance.Then you pay $90.00 to receive $60.00...a month. Can you live anywhere on $60.00 amonth.......this includes having to pay all bills/rent/morgage/water/elect ic.....nope.didn't think so.Guess who wrote the Insurance bill for Wal-Mart ? Hillary. Did you know where some of the clothing is made and in what conditions the children have to work?Yep.....sweat factories.Sometimes with locked doors. Great news huh?. NO. Just some more info.Also while Sam was alive..the company did value their employees but after he passed,so did the careing.Bottom-line.That is all you would hear.Did you know that each store has a built in loss expantcy of 18 tractor tailer loads a week?(theft).So......with that they make alot of money.How many stores could afford to loose that much merchandise? and survive? none.The reason is they mark everything up double what it cost for the store to purchase it. When things go on mark down.....well.....just watch the lowest price an item gets to. They still make money off it.Just a little insight.

I love WalMart! Yes i do not agree with the way they treat their employees etc but in this economic climate i cannot afford to take the high road..they provide many many more jobs than a mom-pop store, they pay more in local real estate and sales tax, and save me money

Yes it is true they provide jobs.They do pay more in taxes and they do save people money....the children in the locked sweat shops (one of which burned down with the doors still locked) do not recieve much of a pay.....and the money they spend in lawsuits each year could greatly go to others if they would just be fair and upright with people who make the items they sale and the US buys.Hopefully from the tragic events they as a store have learned and are doing better.......I do not know. But I do know that alot of people all around the US are turning to mom and pop stores and rumage sales and pawn shops and other venues to buy things they absolutely need.Other than this many are just simply doing without.
I hope that things will get better soon.
I hope that Wal-Mart lives up to the standards it was built on by Sam.

I love walmart and continue to support it.my money is just as hard-earned as the owners of mom and pop shops and if they can't compete with the walmarts of the world and have to go out of business so be it! This country was founded and grew on a basis of competition and not always fair competition..the consumer should determine what business survives and which fail not interference from the govt

Wal Mart does not compete "fairly". They tell suppliers what to do, how much they will pay and can destroy any business that does not comply with their demands. The volume of items WM buys at a time means they get the bare minimum price per item while the Mon and Pops have to pay the highest price, cutting their margin of profit. WM is a monopoly just like the ones of old, the "Robber Barons" which cause the Anti-Trust Act to be passed. If you haven't noticed, WM is cutting down choices, limiting selectivity in items, therefore creating a higher margin of profit and they don't care what customers want. You have to accept their product offerings as the choices have been limited with the closing of Mom and Pops and even larger franchise stores that can't compete with WM which tells suppliers who they can sell to or not and if that supplier sells to a competitor, then they won't be selling to WM. WM is not good in the long run for our nation and should be broken up, just as "Ma" Bell was broken up.

If a Wal-Mart employee is smart enough to carry disability insurance, they recieve 50% of their normal gross pay while off on medically necessary sick leave for the first six months and 45% thereafter and can opt (for a few cents more a pay check) to have their insurance paid by their disability carrier while they are off. Also, it is common knowledge that Wally World only uses Republican law firms for all their corporate work, not Hillary. Their losses (theft, spoilage, breakage) typically run 1% to 2% of sales. That is actually low for the industry; K-Mart/Sears typically run closer to 5%.

I agree alan that we should buy local and I do but your premise that is what drove the jobs to China I know is wrong.The business of cheap labor and virtually non-existent pollution laws make the bottom line too appealing. Manufacturing companies that sell no products in wal-mart and never will still manufacture in China. Supposedly high end textiles that will never market is but one example.Weber grills Char broil products are not sold in Wal-Mart but guess where they are made. It is a combination of business people and consumers looking only at the bottom line.I tried to buy a pair of jeans Made in the USA at a store and not even Pendleton Jeans are made here.I have gone to a made in the USA web site but there were products listed their engineered in the USA but manufactured in China.It is up to the consumer to demand and buy USA manufactured products.
