Does anyone remember the day lightning hit one of the big trees in front of the Jr. High School? I believe 2 or 3 were killed. I can't remember what year that was. I was there, at the Bubble Cup getting a soda.

Yes, I remember when that happened. It was
raining and the girls got under the big tree when
lightning hit it. They were waiting on the bus.
I think the year was 1960 because my sister was
there (I was in grade school)Such a sad day.
The girls notebook zippers were melted and their
hair was burned off.

Sherri/Polle(JoAnn), I believe the year was 1958 or '59, I can't remember who was killed(name?maybe Ruby Lancaster???), but several were burned/injured, and had to go to the Hospital(one injured was Sue Landers, who had to have a hip replaced several years ago, because of the Lightening Strike). I had gone into the Band-Hall to get my Trombone, and walked by them, and just had crossed Lamar when the Lightening struck!! Bob/Eddy Bradford's Mother had offered me a ride home, and she was waiting in her car across Lamar St. I hope both of you two are well, and kicking!! Best Regards to you both!! Ronny B.
PS. JoAnn, Thanks for 'all' the memories 'our' Families shared together!!!!

Sherri, JoAnn, Ron, this comes from Sweetwater Reporter dated 8 Sep 57(Sunday) stating the event occured Friday which would have been Sep 6. Dead were Robbie Lee Mitchell, 15 and Glenda Sue Condray, 14, injured were Ruby Walker, 15, Gail Condray (Glendas sister), Dorothy Taylor, 12, her sister Louise, 14, Barbara Freeman, 12, Peggy Sue Landers, 12, Brenda Gause, 13, Patricia O'Donald, 14, Brenda Caldwell, 14. Three others entered the hospital but later dismissed. They were Alice Lightfoot, Kay Lou Roy and Linda Beall. There are quite a few other names mentioned in the article, firemen, police, ministers, school personnel, witnesses, personnel from the radar station and Sinclair Oil. Obituaries also. If you want transcribed copies, post it and we will figure out someway to get it to you. Hope this is helpful and have not omitted anyone or made a mistake in names etc. I know some of the survivors are living in Sweetwater today.

Thank You Counts in Merkel!! All help is appreciated!! I had forgotten some of the names, of who passed away, and who was injured. But I remember it was a tragic accident, and traffic was lined up from Jr. High all the way back up to Broadway!! My Mother worked at J.C. Penneys and could not get her car out on the street to get under the Rail-Road underpass. But by the time she got to School,I was already home on Runnels St. And my sister was in High School had already ridden the Bus, which made a detour around Jr.High(Lamar St.), and she made it home before Mother finally went back to work and called us at home. This was a terrible day in Sweetwater!! Thanks Again,, Ronny B.

Hello Ronny B. Yes, I remember you and your lovely
family. What great times we had. Thanks for all
the info about the lightning strike. I have
heard Kay Lou Roy comment about that day and how
she died and was revived. Remember all the fun
we had going to Calif. and in band? e-mail me
sometime. I'm polyfromparis@yahoo.com. Poly

Mother in law in Trent Tx just passed away.
We found a newspaper article from 1977 that revisited the 9-6-57 lightning accident in Sweetwater.
I am Eddie Mitchell and Robbie Lee Mitchell was my sister. I was in the 3rd grade at East Ridge at the time. The 1977 article mentioned several things I did not know.
I googled Ruby Nell Walker Rogers who lives in Paradise Tx and then talked to her today. Ruby and Robbie were close friends. Ruby gave me a lot more details about that day. They worked with Ruby for over an hour before reviving her. She said she was in a long tunnel with a door at the end with no handle. God said you can't come in now. She saw a small light at the other end which got bigger and then she woke up in the hospital.
It has been 55+ years and it still seems like yesterday with things that day burned into my memory.
