I hate that this happened but rule #1 speed kills. Also, the juvenile delinquents we have in Gaston that have nothing better to do with their stupid redneck selves is the reason people brick their mailboxes. I can't tell you how many mailboxes we had vandalized before we gave up and got a PO Box.$52 a year is cheaper than replacing a mailbox every six weeks. The only reason I didn't brick my mailbox is because I had a police officer tell me if that if someone hit it (like these people did), I would be responsible for the damage because it was on my property. I hope that doesn't happen to the owner of this mailbox. That's just straight out wrong!!

Thinning the herd. You! Out of the gene pool!!! You are defective and you must not breed! But seriously, you're right. The company that I work for had a trailer dropped at a customer location. Some drunk ran off the road, smacked into it and died...his family was awarded 8 Million from my company.

The police officer told you wrong. If someone struck your brick mailbox with their vehicle and IF they had at least the state minimum insurance limits as required by law on their vehicle and IF that policy was in force (no lapse due to non-pay) there would be coverage for the damage done to your brick mailbox. You would have to file a claim with the driver's auto insurance co and deal with that though.

County ordinance, you must have a breakaway mailbox. Not only is the moron that was speeding at fault, the owner of the mailbox is at fault.

My first reaction was "Now some county councilmember is going to say no one can have brick mailboxes." Then I saw the post above that suggests it's already an ordinance and my reaction was "figures." Then I thought about the ordinance that I wish we had or if we don't I wish were enforced...big *ss shrubs and bushes right next to the roadway that so many people and places of business use to landscape. It is so hard to see oncoming traffic w/out sticking your nose too far out. So in that respect, why would you want a big brick mailbox that is probably obstructing your view of oncoming traffic I mean besides the status symbol and aesthetics of it? Sorry, I still don't really see why it would need an ordinance when you've got the state planting trees in the median ...you're gonna die if you hit a tree just as surely if you're going too fast so what's the difference? Idiots are always going to contribute to their own deaths by being stupid and speeding no matter what kind of mailbox you have, they'll find a way.

I wanted one that was pricked years ago, but was told it had to be a break away. Course ,then, whoever was driving would have probably hit one of my trees.

I wonder if the BRICK MAILBOX was located on highway Right of Way?
If it was...could be a law suit against the DOT and property owner.

I really think we should change our laws and our thinking. It's not like the mailboxes go out looking for victims. They are more than just guidelines for "the road ended". If someone hits your house, is it your fault? No. In the VERY first place, they were not supposed to be driving there. When will our laws reflect common sense. I'm tired of protecting idiots! It's too expensive because just when you think you've covered all the bases, they out-idiot you. That woman with the hot coffee should be boiled in coffee just after being told "you don't pour it there you idiot".

Bricking a mail box is the same as building a permanent structure on the county/state right of way. While the driver was at fault for striking the mail box the owner of the mail box hold a high percentage of responsability for the severity of the accident and the fatality. While he may not be charged with a criminal offence, in civil court it may cost him a lot of $$$$$.

This event shouldn't be about someone's stupid mailbox! A person lost their life because of careless judgment. You people should be ashamed of yourselves for being so disrespectful of the dead. If anything people should learn to be more careful when driving and always wear their seatbelt no matter what.
