DO NOT MOVE TO SHAROLYN LANE. Drugs & more Drugs. No way! That area is going down hill so fast. I would be afraid to move myself & child there. There are safer neighborhoods.

I just moved back to Sumter from Georgia and Sumter is what you make of it. My children are in a school system,,,,public where the teachers care unlike Georgia. We have a church family and I have never felt more safe or more blessed. My 10 year old never wants to leave. I don't know what you people are talking about.

To the post by "Crybabies", Life IS GOOD when you live behind the walls of SHAW....I know...I spent 15 years there....But outside those walls and in this community for the past 13 YEARS,(compared to your 5) I believe my experience is like that of an older adolescent compared to a grade schooler. Yeah, this is a low cost area, for your government provided pay and allowances, but the locals don't make that....Crime is up....Services are down.... Mismanagement is rampant in the local economy, much like everywhere else...Hell the local council appropriated much of SHAW, the surrounding area, and parts of the county in the last few years, just to raise the tax base...If you had lived here the past 30 years, you would know.
As far as getting out of the area, you are at a premium, you just go out to the flight line and get a government funded jet....these folks don't have that option.
To "Northern Redneck", do yourself a favor, come spend some "quality" time before you jump. Don't come durng the Holidays, because that is always a false character representation, but come during the mid month when the welfare checks and unemployment are almost exhausted....you'll see what we are talking about..... Whining.....Hell no, just representing what is really here!!

I recommend to anyone before moving to Sumter to do their research. Read the local newspaper The Item they have it available online. That will help get a feel for some of what is going on in the area.

I've been in Sumter for 12 years. Things have changed a lot in those years. I've seen some neighborhoods go down hill and other turned around.

I also recommend you check out what is going with the local real estate market if you are planning on purchasing a home. Personally I don't see the low cost of living that some do. I moved from Washington DC area and prices are pretty close to what I was paying there.

Work opportunities in Sumter are somewhat limited depending on what type of work you do. You may want to check out America's job Bank for work in your field.

Like Military Retiree said spend some time in Sumter before making the plunge.

My experience is coming from up North to Sumter can be somewhat of a culture shock.

I am originally from NY and can tell you that Sumter is not a good place to raise your children. The private schools down here are not even equivalent to the public schools I went to in NY. Believe me I checked in on it. Also if I move back to NY I was told my kids had to be held back a grade or test into thier grade. The crime factor here is really bad as well. Sure people can say that NY is bad but look at our population compared to Sumters. I am looking forward to moving out of here

sumter is horrible. crack, herion, pot, coke, crystal meth ridden, rats nest. gang bangers and prostitutes on every downtown corner. best way to live in sumter is to live somewhere else. don't drive through it, especially dotn stop at the train tracks late at night. if you are unfortunate enough to live there put bars on your windows not to be locked in but to lock others out. i was born and rased in sumter my dad retired from shaw as a master srgnt. i got into hanging out with the wrong ppl and winded up in sumter county jail. i live in va now thank god.
i was homescholled all the way till i graduated with 3.5 gpa in 99 at 17 years old.
didnt help too much apparently.... cant barely get a descent job now to support my wife of 5 years and my 8 month old son....4 felonies for styealing stuff to be cool has ruined my life. its not sumters fault its mine and the ppls in sumters fault.

By the way, they only have terrible drugs like that up north. Obviously there will be a bad side of town in every state! Weed is the biggest drug we have here, and Sumter has it's nice parts. If you want to go to a real nice spot to raise children, go to Detroit.*Sarcasm.*

damn, btw you make yourself sound dumb " They may pick at my kids because, they do not have the southern accent. " Yeah right people in Sumter do not sound like hillbilly's. This isn't Louisiana.

I would say, yes some DO sound like hillbillies, I could name a few people right off the top of my head, but I don't think that fitting in that way would be a big worry, I would worry more about the violence that occurs downtown and the overcrowding in some gradeschool classrooms. Primarily I've heard good things about Alice Drive, but we can't go there so we will be paying for my daughter's education at private school. I am hopeful that we will be able to move again soon and that we can go back north where we're from so my children can get the same education we'll be paying for here for free in Pennsylvania. To be honest if I had a choice to move here, I would not. Good Luck, though.

Me and my husband moved here recently and I do not like it here at all . My son goes to willow drive elementary he was attending school the day when the gun thing happened. I think the teacher's do a very pore job of teaching the children. Can't wait to move back to VA were there are less student's in the class and the teacher's actually enjoy doing there job.

I have talked to people in the area and they say either home school, private school, or Alice drive if you can get them in there . They said we was out of district.

I was born and raised in Sumter, SC! I beleive Sumter is a good place to raise kids all except the school systms need some help with ALOT of things. Other than that it is safe as long as you watch who your kids hang out with. I had to move due to my freinds and all the trouble we got into together but it is a good place!!

I have lived in Sumter for nearly 3 years and I can't understand the comments about kind people in Sumter! I moved here from Tallahassee, FL, where people where smiley and nice to one another regardless of race or age or background. Since I have been here, my husband, my dad, my 1 year old and I have all been called crackers and other degrading things, all on seperate occations. I can MAYBE understanding someone hating the military or something but to HATE a child and his mother because they walk into a convenience store to buy a water! Terrible! I came here with an open mind and ready for a new chapter of my life, now I can't wait to get out of here and close this chapter forver!!!!!! I'd say worrying about your children not having accents is the least of your worries. Best of luck in Life and whatever you decide!

Hey there! I am 36 - and I grew up in Sumter. I still work in Sumter in an office position, but now live in Turbeville. I never had any problems growing up in Sumter, but I will tell you it is all in the location. Some schools are good - others are terrible. Because of the loction of my home when my daughter started school - she was zoned to attend RE DAVIS school. This school was 23 miles away from our home!! Sumter is all about busing kids in from all over - just to make it is an evenly "raced" school. So we ended up sending her to Laurence Manning Academy in Manning. I have been very pleased with the school and her grades.

Again - when you move here - keep in mind it is all about location - location- location!!
