The Bright Forever

Feb 15, 2009 | Posted by: macuser | Full story: blogcritics.org

Lee Martin's second novel, The Bright Forever , is a painful, agonizing tale of guilt and loss, a tragedy told with all the tortured wisdom of hindsight and plenty of psychological damage to go around.

Does anyone remember the accurate story of the Kavanaugh girl who was brutally murdered?
This book is based on that murder - It appears as thought names and places have been changed.

I thought there used to be a pretty strong article on Crime Library but I couldn't find it.

Also-

Peggy Litherland. Anyone remember that story? She was murdered in St. Francisville. I couldn't find anything about either of these stories.

I remember when it happened. I remember people were looking for her everywhere. They found her body in the woods by the highway that runs past the power plant in Mt.Carmel

I grew up in an old two story house across from the hospital on state street, where the highway splits. growing up, the neighborhood kids used to tell me that the mansion style house that sits at the top of the hill (where the hwy and state street splits) was the home of the cavanaugh girl before her abduction and murder. I just want to know if this is indeed correct.

I was 18 when Dottie Kavanaugh was murdered - I lived in Robinson, IL - she was 8 yrs. old - William Gonder was convicted of her murder and had tried to pick up another young girl in the Olney, IL area prior to this

I don't know why it says I'm from Lincoln NE - still here in Robinson - I've tried to pull up archives from that time period but can't find anything on Gonder or Dottie - any luck?

In case no one has seen these before, here's a couple of links to images of newspaper columns that were written back then.

I find stories of this interesting as I have live in LC my whole life. I find mysteries and history interesteing when talking about our small toen. I'd like to research this more and know more about this story...as in what was his reasoning, where did the murder take place, etc. is this book an accurate account of the events? If so I'd love to read it.

I always thought it was the white two story home to the North of the mansion. Home has pillars that go up to the second story, just a few houses from State Street.
