I'm not from Summit but was at Overlook visiting and needed gas. Drove by the Ashwood Ave. Exxon and thought it was a mistake on the sign at $4.89 for regular. I asked the service-man why so high and he said go in and ask the owner...I did...what a weird conversation. I asked if I missed something on the news...like oil shot up or something. He said it "is always high" I said why..."many reasons" I said how about just one..."it's an Exxon and that's just what it is"....He definitely has some weird other motive...I just can't figure out why his prices are more than 2x the average. What is going on with this guy? Anybody have an answer?

Simple if you look at his lines, oh wait there are none, you would know why his prices are so high. I found it to be amazing. On RT 22 the price is $2.03 and in Summit its $4.89 maybe we should report him to a news channel and see whats up?"

The owner just wants a car repair shop....he could care less about selling gas. It's not Exxon, there is another Exxon gas station up the road selling it for at least $2.50 less. No need to "report" him to a news channel....just don't buy his gas.

oh do not worry about that, i would never pay that price. It is just an insult to everyone. If he wants to just be a shop then close off the pumps very simple.

I know it's crazy....I can't believe it when there is actully a car there. That Exxon has become a landmark of sorts....when giving directions to where I work I say, do you know where the expensive Exxon is? Everyone knows exactly where it is. I think it's the highest in the state. Not sure that is a good thing if you are wanting to have a car repair business. Most would assume he charges outrageous prices for repairs as well. Not good business sense.

Thanks for the feedback. I would think that Exxon wouldn't be too happy to have an owner pricing gas that high....just not good for anyone. When an unsuspecting motorist wanders in and isn't alert to the high price well that is just unfair. I agree...just close the pumps then. It is just blatantly obnoxious to price gas that high.

Both the Exxon stations are first off Rt 24, but $4.89 when you can get gas < $2 elsewhere in town? WTF! Wonder if they're a front for a money laundering operation?

Watch out for the Delta on the corner of Summit Ave & Walnut St - always check your credit-card bill as they'll try and rip you off.

I have been driving by this station for a few years. never bought gas there since the price is outrageous!!!! On Saturday I stopped at the pumps, rolled down the window and asked "How much for High Test?" He said $4.989. I said "Are you on DRUGS?"....
then I said " I'll take 10 gallons"
He said "really?"
I said "No way Jack!" and peeled out. I'll take my GTI to Lukoil for $2.239 and buy russian gas.

This station has been on the news and in the papers, there is no law that prevents him from charging 4.89 a gallon.
Secondly, there are better things in life to bitch about
in conclusion, don't buy his gas, problem solved, next case.

Dave: I'm sure there are better things for you to bitch about, than people bitching about $4.89 gas. Like living in Newark.

dr vinny, who cares if theyre making money off of short hills residents? those people are the ones who can afford that $4.89 per gallon price, and several possibly dont care about the price. you will see a few cars at that exxon now and then. like someone else said, if we're not buying his gas, then we have nothing to worry about. there are other gas stations. it's called freedom of choice.

what i find odd is that they were always about $3.50 when gas was $2.50 maybe a year ago and then when gas rose to $4, its like they never came back down with the rest of the world. also, although its in summit, that ashwood exxon is not in a ritzy area. someone once told me that that station is actually owned by exxon corp. could that explain the prices?

Just yesterday my wife pulled into that Exxon, which is just off the highway, needing gas and didn't even bother to check the rates before handing the attendant her credit card. When she finally glanced over at the pump she tried to get him to stop but it was too late. Eighty dollars later (which we don't really have right now)there was nothing she could do. She yelled at the attendant but realized he was just doing his job. Being that she is a very trusting and polite Brit she's more upset at herself for not noticing and feels like a fool for spending $50 more than she normally would for gas. She has asked, however, whether there is something that can be done to stop this. She is assuming that any gas station has the right to charge whatever they feel as long as they advertise the price, however is there anything that she can do to report this and perhaps prevent anyone else from making the same mistake?

There are rumors that the high prices are to keep customers away, and that the gas station is actually a front for a drug ring of sorts. There seem to be cars at the station at odd times, not even at the pumps.
