Anniversary of sinking of Hunley submarine marked
#1 Feb 17, 2013
The men of the Hunley were true heroes and have inspired many people. My interest in the Hunley started when I first read about her in 1960. I was then just 12 years old. It became my goal to discover the wreck, which I finally did in 1970. At that time few cared. It was not until May of 1995, when divers photographed the wreck that people got excited. Their work came 25 years after my discovery and only months after I published my book "Treasures of the Confederate Coast: The Real Rhett Butler & Other Revelations" with an account of my find and a map showing the wreck's exact location. That expedition's official director, underwater archaeologist Dr. Mark Newell, used my maps and credits me with finding it first, but they still deserve immense credit, because without their efforts it would probably still be sitting on the bottom. In September of 1995, I was asked by Senator McConnell to donate my rights to the wreck to the State. I immediately did so with Attorney General Condon signing for the state.
Please take time to read about my discovery. Go to http://hunleyfinder.wordpress.com/article/the...
