I have a general question that I thought the public may be able to help. My ex wife and I divorced a few years ago. My kids are under my health insurance which covers 80% and she is entitled to pay the 20%. My kids had some dental work done and my youngest daughter had an echo done on her heart a month ago. She received some bills totalling $1,000.00 she is entitled to pay. She called me upset and gave me a sob story about how she afford to pay the bills etc so I loaned her the money to cover them. Last week I found out from my oldest son that she is receiving food stamps, clothing vouchers, and has a medical card even though I pay her $1,500 a month (she has a job but only makes $ 28,000.00) Someone told me that since she has a medical card, that would cover the 20% she owes after my insurance pays for it. Is that true? Any advice would be great.

That is the way my Mom's works. She has medicare and pays an AARP payment each month of a ridiculious amount and then she has a Medicaid card that picks up whatever is left of doctor or hospital bills. I would check into it if I were you. It never hurts to ask.

I am going to check into it. She has never told me that she has a medical card and honestly, I am now wondering if she did turn that 20% into her card and used the cash I gave her on something else. It wouldn't surprise me. I dont want to get her into trouble because for the most part, we get along, but I dont want to be handing her money that she is using for things other than bills etc. I dont even know how to go about doing all of this or looking into it but I will try. I wonder if there is anyway to find out that she has medicaid or not? Thanks for the info by the way!

If u two r divorced, and she has custody of the kids then yes they r entitled to a medical card until the age of 18. Then and if she makes too much they would fall into another category but would still receive a medical card. However, with the income she has coming in I do not know how she is receiving stamps and clothing vouchers. Unless there is income she is not reporting.

Probably the one obstacle that you will run into trying to find out is this privacy act stuff. I would contact the DHHR and pray that you get a case worker that will cooperate with you and be helpful. I always get the run around with my Mom's medicaid and such. She is totally not able to do it, so it is all left up to me.

There is a law called Hippa and by law they can't tell you anything.

If she makes 28k and also gets 1500/mo from you in alimony/child support she would not legally be eligible for food stamps or a medical card unless she has many many children. I have never heard of someone making over 3 thousand dollars a month being eligible for assistance. Sounds fraudulent to me.

The $1,500.00 she gets from me is a personal check each month. For some reason, that's how the court did it. I wish now that we would have arranged it to be withdrawn from my check that way she would have to report it.

Someone told me today that Medicaid only covers kids until they are 5. Are you sure it's 18?

It covers children until they are 18 but only for children of poor parents. That 1500 by itself would likely make her children ineligible for medicaid.

The child should not be eligible for a medical card since the child is already on insurance.

You can contact your insurance and find out what the medical card picked up! The insurance is in your name then they have to tell you! Also, I don't see how she can get a medical card if there is already health insurance! She makes way too much money for a medical card!

Of course she shouldn't qualify for Medicaid! She isn't reporting the income I give her but what can I do? It sucks!
