Around 12:30 p.m., I entered US 19 at BP heading North to turn right on Rt 41. As I started North, I heard the siren from the fire truck but did not see it. After I passed the North Wal Mart traffic light, I saw the fire truck in my rear view mirror. I was in the right lane behind a coal tractor trailer. There were several cars in the left lane basically ignoring the fire truck. There were 4 cars in the left turn lane at McDonalds and none moved into the medium to give the fire truck access and right of way. The North bound light was red and the left turn arrow turned green. The fire truck tried to manuever between the right lane and the left turn lane and was going to turn left at the light. The white car in front in the left turn lane turned directly into the side of the fire truck and spun around around showering the road with parts.
The car's driver was at fault for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. I immediately called 911 and informed them of the wreck. I was able to squeeze past the coal truck and turn right on Rt 41 to continue on my way and help make way for emergency vehicle access to the wreck. I personally know the fire truck driver and he said no one was seriously injured but all walked away shook up.

Always remember this, Emergency vehicles must operate with due care. Merely because we run with lights and sirens to incidents does not relieve us of responsibility to operate with due care. For instance, we can operate in a manner that is inconsistent with the motor vehicle law but we must always do so taking as much precaution required to avoid a crash. We do not have the right to just fly through a red light. We can proceed through a red light but must slow to make sure we can do so without causing an incident.
It is a two way street, no pun intended. Citizens must yield right of way to an emergency vehicle but we must operate with due care in all situations.

I was in the area yesterday when all that was going on..did NOT see the accident occur...HOWEVER..I was South bound at the light at Super 8...this Deputy came FLYING through that light (red) He could have killed someone then...on the other hand I saw Gary Brown SPD just behind him, Gary Brown was driving at a safe speed ( slow really, slow enough for me to know who was in the car) he had some kind of warning alarm that kind of "buzzed"...point being Brown got there w/o putting anyone else in danger..the deputy did not.( both just for clarification were North bound) Some of these fire and police go completely crazy when responding to calls, putting many others at risk too.

I was four cars back in the right lane and saw everything. The white car driver failed to yield to an emergency vehicle. All it had to do was stop to avoid being hit.
Yes, I know Rick well, he rents from me.

well the white car was in the left lane not the left turn lane and he came to a stop at the red light because you are required to stop when a light is red.the coal truck was in the right TURN lane stopped for a red light.the fire truck tried to go from the left lane into the right lane but didnt miss the car.Last but not least if you were driving a little blue car your lucky i looked in my pass. side mirror before turning right or you might be dead now. Stupid people like you should not drive and it is agianst the law to pass or squeeze between a vehicle and the guard rail just because your in a hurry!!!!!!

If you were a coal truck in the right turning lane onto 41, I'm wondering how one earth any size vehicle could squeeze between you and the guardrail? I don't think there is room for that on any turning lane.
