I am new to the area and it seems this is the closest college for me. Anyone have any info Bad or good? I need to know if I'd be wasting my time attending this school or not. Is it accredited?

It is an accredited college that offers certificate and associate degrees (2 year). It has developed partnerships with Glenville State College and WVU Online for those choosing to get a bachelor's (4 year) degree. They have highly qualified instructors that could teach anywhere but choose to teach at a community college because the class sizes are smaller. Depending on what degree you are planning to earn, it is accessible and affordable. My daughter is in Med School at WVU and many of the other Med students have also taken some classes at New River. You should choose the college that offers the degree that you are interested in choosing as a career, but if you are undecided, New River would be a great place to earn your General Education degree.

In my opinion, this school is a joke. They offer an extremely limited number of majors. I understand it is a CTC but I attended a CTC in Kentucky and it offered anything you can imagine. Also, I dont know what it is but I only receive half the financial aid at this school that I was getting in Kentucky. This is just my opinion but many students would agree that New River is quite ridiculous!

Go another route. Most of the teachers there only have a Bachelor's degree and CAN'T teach at any other college without a Master's!

Concord & Bluefield State offer courses in Beckley, as well as the University of Charleston in Spring '13.

Although Concord, Bluefield State and University of Charleston do indeed offer classes at Beckley, you also could choose from Glenville State. Glenville teaches some classes at the Nicholas Campus of New River. I would like to correct the information provided above. The full-time faculty of New River all have Doctorate or Masters Degrees with the exception of a couple of nursing instructors that hold special certifications. The majority of the faculty transferred from Glenville State College when the college was a branch campus of Glenville. The highly qualified faculty is one reason that New River is accredited.

That may be true in Nicholas county, but I've recently attended in Raleigh county and not one professor held a masters or doctorate! I was told anyone with a Bachelor's could teach at New River CTC since one must only have a higher degree than what they are teaching (Associate level).

"You were told anyone with a Bachelor's degree could teach...." That is simply false information. Please contact the higher learning commission about that and I assure you that all of them have their master and or doctorate except a few (less than 5) who do carry a bachelor degree and teach LPN classes.

Actually, the Raleigh County Campus also all have Doctorates or Masters Degrees too including the adjunct instructors. If you attend New River, you could find this information on the course syllabi. Obviously you have not had a good experience at New River; however, it is not because the faculty is not qualified. New River remains accredited because of it's highly qualified faculty unlike Mt. State. I am not trying to give you a hard time but I hate it when people spread misinformation.

I would also like to add that there are several faculty members at the Beckley Campus that have Doctorate and Masters Degrees from Ivy League schools including both Yale and Harvard.

I did not have any bad experiences at New River and I am more than qualified in reading a course syllabus! I have friends who are employed there and they do NOT have a master's or doctorate. I never said they weren't accredited. You should look into ALL the faculty employed there prior to calling people liars!!! Funny to have "church" in your username and yet YOU are judging people. God is our only Judge and HE knows I'm writing the truth! Furthermore, why must you keep talking "up" the school? If it's so great, it would speak for itself!

For a 2 year school, it is ok for this area. The faculty is "OK" too. They are NOT the best of the best though!

Which teachers don't have masters degrees? Since you know so much then name them. No one will know who you are so lets hear it.

I would like to know too. Every job posted for faculty notes that a Masters Degree is required and a Doctorate degree preferred.

I am not naming names on this site for you to tear apart! I have friends who teach there with just a Bachelor's and I am not posting their names. Enroll in a class and see for yourself. Ask an advisor when you enroll, and they'll let you know as well!

I'm not posting names. It isn't their fault they work!!! Asking for innocent names shows just how educated you are!
