Any idea what mines are going to be affected?
At this point all they will say is that Kentucky will be hit the hardest and that a huge percentage of the layoffs will be steam mines. I'm not sure if they even know exactly how they are going to cut their costs down to where they need to be but they will have to. If your in the Huntington area any time soon take the first exit into Kentucky going towards Louisa and look at the stock pile of steam coal by the river. They are flat out mining more than they can sell. Most of the local met coal mines in this area have buyers for their coal for at least a year some many years (Pocohontas 6 and 7 seams, Sewell, and Eagle seams). All are high quality coal that will probably have buyers untill they are all mined out. Well at least that's what I have been told. But I am not making any large purchases on credit if you know what I mean.

Good stuff there BH, but Alpha is full throttle & still operating @ a loss, got environmental costs they can't escape, running out of productive reserves, trying to develop reserves in environmentally impossible places making development cost unjustifiable and end up spending a dime for nickels worth of coal. Not good business!

All a plot by big corporations to get Obama out of office. After the election will run at full throttle. The dumb people in this state were fooled back in 2000 about the gun issue. How the Republicians are using coal as the issue to again fool the people of WV.

Well they cut production today in many KY operations. 150 jobs lost..Other miners will be offered different positions at other mines.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405270...

Alpha Natural Resources Inc. ANR -4.23% plans to reduce coal output at its Kentucky mines and eliminate about 150 jobs, citing continued market pressures and new regulations on coal-fired power plants that make production from the area uneconomic.

The coal producer said it will discontinue mining at four mines and idle two coal-preparation plants in Pike and Martin counties. The company will also scale back production at several other mines and close four contract mines.

Alpha Natural has about 14,500 employees. Of the 436 workers affected, the company said 286 will be offered other positions.

I got out of that business years ago and used my head not my back. Go Obama 2012!!!!!!

The grapevine says that Alpha still needs major cost cutting to stay afloat after the KY layoffs & they are considering serious layoffs @ the Brooks Run ops. & Leivasy, WV ops & they may cut ALL wages & benefits by 25%!

Only reason Alpha brought Massey was to save the upper management from the lawsuit. Either company gives a shit about the employees.

Where did that info come from??? Right now Brooks Run are betting all their chips on Jerry Fork. Jerry Fork has great equipment most of it new, high production, a prep plant within a 1/2 mile, and a great group of men. And most of all their coal is already sold throughout the year. Green Valley's 3 mines have the best coal from here to Boone or McDowell county. They are in good shape trust me. I know some people that know some people that heard it from some people that Green Valley will be just fine.

Alpha Natural Resources stock is hitting all-time lows in recent trading as the coal industry in general has fallen into disfavor by investors.

Alpha stock closed at $5.87 on Monday, June 11, down 23 cents from Friday. According to the Associated Press, Friday's close was the all-time low for Alpha stock before Monday. Alpha stock has lost about 82 percent since its high last summer.

But Alpha is not alone. Stocks overall declined Monday, and coal stocks in particular continued their slide from last summer's highs. Arch Coal is down about 80 percent, CONSOL Energy 50 percent, James River Coal 91 percent and Patriot Coal 94 percent.

According to the AP, mild winter and spring weather reduced demand for coal from utilities that use it as fuel to generate electricity. Additionally, utilities and some manufacturers have switched from coal to cheaper natural gas for fuel. The price of natural gas has fallen nearly 25 percent this year because booming production has produced a glut, further weakening the attractiveness of coal.

As a result, a number of coal producers have cut back production and shuttered mines to reduce costs.

"The U.S. coal markets have been pretty doom and gloom lately," Raymond James analyst James Rollyson said in a research note Monday, according to the AP. "In fact, many of the coal equities act as if they are going out of business."

The lone bright spot, Rollyson writes, is in the export market. U.S. coal exports are on track for a record year, he said, thanks to the timing of some contracts and supply issues from other exporting nations. But this bright spot could fade quickly if the global economy were to weaken further.

Bug Ridge -- I don't know how you do it. These idiots drive me insane with their Obama-bashing. I can only take a few comments and I'm ready to puke. They will never, ever see past the coal industry's propaganda. Just like one of the commenters said about when the coal industry went in the toilet back in the 80's and her husband had to find a job in Virginia. All of you in the coal industry please figure out that it will ALWAYS be boom or bust. Make that big money while you can and save it! Because you will need it when the industry goes bust again. Instead of buying a new home, a brand new and biggest 4-wheel drive you can get, 2 or 3 new 4-wheelers, a big screen TV, two or three smart phones and whatever else Precious wants, save your money and live modestly. The coal industry will not cry about letting you go when the profits start to dwindle. "Adios amigos, thanks for all the back-breaking work and the millions of dollars you made us, now go somewhere else. Of course we may call you back when the market gets better, but don't count on it." Quit crying about Obama, open your eyes and see who you work for. You work for a very greedy and dishonest industry. The work you do may be an honest day's work, but what you're industry is doing is not. You've got to look past your next paycheck and see the bigger picture. Only when the last tree has been cut, the last stream poisoned, and the last fish dead will we realize we can't eat money.
