It's a shame you let a little mishap like this stop your college career. Sounds like to me you were more worried about getting your money than getting your education. It is a common thing for colleges to hold your money and not realease it to you. Get back to school and don't be a fool!

most colleges have found that a lot of the students get their money upfront and stop going, so they started giving refunds after the withdraw date.

Here is the link for the transfer agreement, sounds like many people really should read it. It answers a lot of questions and is great to have in hand when you trnasfer to a public WV university.
http://www.wvctcs.org/downloads/core%20course...
If there are transfer issues, call the Higher Ed Policy Commission in Charleston, and speak with Dr. Bruce Flack. My sister had no issues transferring New River credits. Her friends did not either. There were only a few that she received elective credit for, which is still credit! I think the misconception stems from Universities wanting to make money. If you are transferring a class from ANY college into Concord and it is in your "major", they want you to re-take it stating theirs is different, more specialized (yeah right, it's more in their pocket!)and they will give you credit as an elective. Any of us formerly in a college setting can tell you that there are always elective credits needed in any degree.
As far as New River, my sister attended and loved it. She paid for 12 credit hours and anything over was FREE!!!!!!!! I went to Concord and was not very happy! You are a number there, over crowded and talk about instructor issues. Try getting a question answered in many of their classes. Good luck, too many students, too little time! There are good and bad instructors everywhere, New River, MSU, WVU, Bridgemont, etc. I was actually jealous that my sister knew her instructors really well and could ask questions during and after classes. Once we were in Walmart, and some man spoke to her, calling her by name. I asked her who he was and she told me it was one of her instructors at NRCTC. Wow! By name I thought in amazement. All I ever heard after standing in line during office hours from my instuctors once I finally got in was
"And your name is?" or the dazed look, "you are in which class of mine?". Like I said, all colleges have their issues. And if there is a transfer issue, it is up to each person to dig deeper and get the facts and what they can do about it. Not just accept "will not transfer", as I have friends who simply questioned the registrar at other universities and it is funny how they caved in and received credit for classes that would have been elective credit. Depends on which day of the week it is and the mood of the registrar or their assistant on the day you are trying. Hope the link will help others.

A community college can be a wonderful asset to a community by offering classes to those who may not be able to go to a larger school, do not want to leave the area, or those who want to pick up core classes and transfer.
BUT, please check and recheck transfer compatiblity. I completed several classes at NRCTC that would not transfer to the university I now attend.

I think I was shocked when I read that you actually started a class at NRCTC just for that purpose to see what your daughter would experience... So, are you rich and bored? If not, you must be one of those mothers who actually is hand holding as well, from what it sounds like. No disrepect, but who cares who college staff dates as long as it is not a child (under 18). Do you think things like this do not happen at community colleges and Universities all the time? It's life and I don't care who they date, as long as they are doing their job and are helpful. And yes, if it were my 18 yr old daughter dating a professor, I am sure I would not be happy, but I would handle the matter in private. I hate to say this, but it appeared to mean you had a personal vendetta against the counselor and this was your way to tourment her with these comments. I personally feel that anyone who has such terrible things to say on this site, should have to post their full name and email address and maybe they would think first before they commit slander. Put yourself in her shoes. I bet I could dig up things on you that you would not want the general public to know, if I only knew who you really were. Then again, I have better things to do with my time. I finished high school a long time ago and I assumed we all left the DRAMA behind there. Guess not... Maybe one day your daughter will experience the wrath of some mother posting horrible comments about her and her life. Then you will understand just how nasty this was. I'll keep you in my prayers, you need help.

I not only did not let my child enroll there, but will never go there myself. I had checked out the school hoping my child could maybe take a class while in High school. I started a class there to observe and what I witnessed was disgusting. The couselor Kenady Bailes walks around holding her daughters hand, and her kids are always in her office, she has a psychology degree and I think she needs counseling, she dates 2 students from there and is old enough to be their mother. What is the administration thinking retaining her? I dropped my class and have told every parent I know not to let their child enroll at NRCTC. As far as the glitches in the system one glitch is Dr. Faulk who does not know what goes on there and the only helpful person I encountered was the gentlemen the students refer to as Boats, he seems geniunel concerned about the students but he would better help you adults elsewhere, he is fighting a no win situation with advisors like Ms. Bailes and some of the professors, which there are several good ones there such as Ms. Friend, Ms. Legg, and Ms Tully, the rest are there to draw a paycheck. Ms. Bailes even teaches one class and she doesn't have the qualifications. Thank God she can't teach in the public school system. As far as the Psyhology professor goes he is the son of the dean for the campus. There is even a woman I used to go to school with Ms. Hopkins that is a lawyer who teaches math. What does that tell you about the qualifications of the educators there?

Did you tell the Dean, Instructors, or the Chief Acadmeic Officer that you encountered problems? My guess is no. So sure, let's gripe here and never gripe to those who can actually make changes.
I recently graduated from New River and I landed a great job, and no one laughed at my interviews. Maybe in your case, they were laughing for other reasons.

A word of advice, go there for no longer than a year and transfer to a university.

My son attends the Beckley campus and he is not having any issues. My daughter attends this campus and she had problems getting books, but that is it. All else went great. I later found out that her not being able to buy books was due to financial aid needing my tax information to get it processed. I guess my problem is we received one letter from the Aid department and none stating that they needed my taxes. This took 4 months of not knowing before I finally demanded a number for I needed to call. I spoke with the guy on the campus in Aid and he helped as much as he could but it seemed he had no control over the situation. I heard they were going through a transition from BSC and this was only temporary. They were taking everything on themselves and not using BSC to process, etc. Everything I am hoping should be fine by January! It's called growing pains and seperation pains from what I hear. As far as the internet, I have not heard any complaints from my son, my daughter said they are redoing a bunch of different stuff to make it work faster and better in the long run. If that is the case, I cannot complain.

It is the third week of classes. We can't get books, too many classes have been canceled, and the new male psych instructor has insulted us. The internet has been down for several days so we can't get info about our classes. This totally sucks and I bet it is just as bad at the other campuses.

I know for a fact everyone had trouble on each of the campuses except beckley cause the had the bookstore through BSC everyone's books were delayed and all the teachers i have worked with us until everyone got their books. So if your student did not take notes in every class until they got books it is their fault not the teachers'. one more thing People go one month to school get their financial aid then drop out. It is hard for people that can not get financial aide to pay for school when all these drug heads and stuff steal money from the government. I am not talking about nicholas in General i mean all the surrounding counties of this campus. Hopefully next Semester is better. I know Faculty and students alike are stressing about this semester. Hang in there ever one. It will get better!!

I agree 110% My daughter signed up for classes 2 years ago only to find out (this year) it should have never been offered to her because the course she was taking no longer existed. Can you imagine? Two years of her life wasted, went in to debt with student loans, wear and tear on her car, etc., etc. Now what are we supposed to do? While she was it was a nightmare. She couldn't get cooperation from teachers or staff. They messed up her grades and we could not get anyone to help us with that problem after numerous phone calls and visits. I tell anyone that will listen....DO NOT GO THERE!!!!!!!

Hoo Haw..... boy,I am amazed wuth the comments every time I remember to check this site out. I have reason to be at New River fairly often and the number one thing I am hearing is that the students dont show for class, leave early, phone or text in class and then expect to pass with disgraceful grades. It seems that only the idea of a Pell grant is foremost in students minds, but in the real world this also takes real commitment and application. After so many failing grades, even this windfall goes away. My advice is to concentrate on being a good student and making the sacrifices needed to get ahead.

i couldnt agree with you more! half of the schools population disappears once the loans come in. i know people that will miss like 5 times in one class and wonder why they fail? like you said people need to realize that college isnt meant to be easy and good grades only come from putting the time and effort into getting them. DUH!

My daughter was a great student and made good grades. It's the school that is the problem. she should have stayed at UC. You want to talk abnout organization, go there for a year. The only reason she wanted to go to New River is because it was closer to home and had the course she wanted. To our surprise after 2 years of school the Dean told us that course should have never been offered to her because IT DOESN"T EVEN EXIST!!!!!!!!! What the hell kind of school are they running!!!!!!!!

Kenady is no longer there and certain departments are under new management, including hers. I had an issue with Admissions and was told to call Beckley and speak to a Director there. Within 10 minutes, she returned my call and within a half an hour she handled my issue, apologized that I had to wait,(are you kidding me, wait, that was no time to wait!)and when I complained about lack of personnel, she assured me areas were being revamped and in the near future, areas would be adding staff. She actually knew what she was talking about when I asked her questions and come to find out, my problem was not with Admissions after all, it was with another department in which she resolved for me. They even called me back to assure me it was taken care of. Things are looking brighter!

Was fired from what I was told.
I love it at new river, I went to Marshall for two semesters and it sucked!

At this school you feel like your known by everyone since I was new and no one knew me the dean introduced me to my teachers ahead of time.
The only problem I have had so far is a teacher quit and they no longer offer the class but the school acted fast and its all good now.
I have really enjoyed going to all my classes I have even seen my teachers outside the classroom, they know who I am and which class I have with them. I am so glad I a transferred schools!:)
