Found a dead blue jay today. I called the Health dept. who said the State is not testing birds for anything at this time. She said the bird probably got into something at a farm and died. So I guess the state is not testing birds for any diseases anymore according to our Health Dept.spokeswoman. Not long ago I heard on T.V. to report such a finding to your health dept. They gave a list of birds and the blue jay was on it. Found at the Paxton Water Office

you can call the State Board of Health in Indianapolis and they will help guide you in the right direction. Also, call your conservation officers about the dead Jay.... they will at least know who you should talk to........hope this helps

Buffalo knats are invading our area, I have lost 2 chickens from the knats. Its from having a warm wet spring, this should pass in the next couple of weeks. If you have been outside working in your yard and thought you were getting bit by a mosiquito,it could be the buffalo knat, they will leave a large welt on you when being bit by one. They are really harmless to humans, but they will kill a animal. But I would still contact a DNR person incase the blue jay died of encephalitis. I'm just a mom helping her son with his poultry project for 4-H.

The TV will blast reports about if you see these dead birds contact your health dept. Why??? When you call if it isn't what tey want to hear they think your a crack pot. But yet they over act when it came time for the swine flu shots , security and cops were everywhere. The drama was amazing. Pictures were in the paper. Good PR. When you are trying to find out why we have so many viruses. No body wants to try to prevent. They just want the glory. This is why the county will never get anywhere. Put me on the front page of the daily rag, don't make me work for my job.

To Beenthere I had the same situation for two years dealing with our board of health. My neighbors septic was leaking and having standing water in my yard. After getting put off for so many years by Carol I called the state board of health. The next day they were at my home. Within a week the neighbor put in a new tank away from my home. Don't deal with our health dept they don't care about anyone.

When you see those reports on TV, they are talking about Vigo county, who has one. When have you seen a restaurant in Sullivan Co. been inspected lately.

Did they seem at all alarmed about how it died. A rare bird like that needs attention. How do you think we preserve our wildlife and nip disease in the bud. What do we have around here educated idiots? Or people riding on the shirttail of others. Not what you know it is who you know. Wake up Sullivan Co. REad beyond the box.

You need to fess up, you never found a dead eagle in your back yard and IF you did, they would have sent a DNR representative, who would have been in an official vehicle. I have dealt with the DNR and conservation officers on several occasions over the past few years and they have never been anything less than professional! Keep in mind they are a small department with a large county to cover... but they still remain VERY professional!

Now THAT I believe :-) Not quite so rare, so probably not as concerned with it's death.
