I found this while asking the question when did social studies replace history. The answer to that question is not answered in this article but it is still a good article.

The answer to my question seems to be sixties and seventies. Was this the beginning of the dumbing down process? What do you think?

Em- from the URL you left it looks like your SS curriculum is from NY state. The curriculum standards are set by each state's dept of Ed. PA does NOT have a SS curriculum but does have one for History. It covers PA, US and World history for grades 1-12. You can download our states history curriculum here:

Hope that makes you feel a little better:)

I was being a bit lazy this Sunday morn. Thanks. On the other hand, we have a lot of transplants here.

I liked the historian site.

It's Sunday, you're allowed and yes,, the historian site was nice. I'll have to go back and explore it. I can barely remember my ss and history classes in public school. I never had much interest in the subject then though I have grown to appreciate it more, especially PA and US history.

The difference in the term history and SS may just be a matter of semantics. If you read the PA standards, SS or at least how I would interpret the term is addressed in the curriculum in the 4 standard statements.....

"Pennsylvania, United States, and World History standard categories use the same four standard statements to guide teachers in
developing planned instruction. The four standard statements are:(A) Political and Cultural Contributions of Individuals and Groups;
(B) Primary Documents, Material Artifacts and Historical Places; (C) How Continuity and Change Has Influenced History; (D)
Conflict and Cooperation Among Social Groups and Organizations."

I believe in PA, SS is traditionally called that at the elementary and middle school level. And It's called History in HS. The 4 standards must be addressed at every level. It seems to me that PA's history curriculum standards are loose guidelines whereas NYS is more specific as to what must be taught in SS and includes social interaction skills. I'm sure those are addressed by PA somewhere. Sad to say we have saddled teachers with teaching social interaction skills along with the 3R's

Does not suprise that NY does not study history. It's taxpayers might find out where the Sullivan laws came from and why they were put in place...It was one of the first frame work parts for enshrining and legalizing corrupt government...
