that covered the 100 degree heat wave

my house is always cool

ok. What size is your home 800 square feet. Are you keeping your cooling at 78 and loving it. For most of us we like it at 73

1,400 sq ft. 3 bedroom 2 bathroom 2 floors. I keep it at 68 degrees.

Not trying to be ignorant to people or argue, just suggesting that everyone make sure their equipment is functioning properly. The highest bill I have had in a year from com ed was 155, and that was January.

I miss the old rated Comed used to have before the price hike. I used to have all electric and the bill used to be about $40 to $60 bucks. I did switch to First Enery Solutions and their rates are alot less than ComEds. My old bill on an all electric house was around $100. Now it's about $45. Not to bad.

Energy First is not an Electric company, they are resellers of Comed service. So if you have a problem and a tech comes out it will be a Comed tech. If the problem is in your house good luck with your bill.

ComEd does not generate electricity. They own the grid and they deliver it to you.

ComEd buys its electricity from multiple suppliers and then charges you a premium in the "supply" portion of your bill. Typically $0.082 per kwh and probably higher during the summer. If you want to see exactly what you're paying, take the total $ under the supply portion of your bill and divide by your kilowatt hours used that month.

When you designate a supplier, or your community chooses to search for a better rate through aggregation, you are telling ComEd that you only want to pay one supplier, not multiple suppliers.

To the best of my knowledge, nothing changes with ComEd. If there's a problem with your service, ComEd is still responsible for fixing it. Not sure why a problem INSIDE your home would be ComEd's responsibility though. ComEd didn't wire your home, a subcontracted electrician to your General Contractor / Developer did. I guess you could ask them to fix issues inside your home, but they'd charge you for that anyway. Wouldn't matter if you designated a different supplier or not.

In regards to Energy First, ComEd will provide the company with a history of electricity usage for the area, both homes and businesses. Energy First will submit a price/kwh roughly 42%(according to the article)lower than what you are currently paying ComEd to "supply" your electricity. It will likely be fixed for a period of one or two years. Some businesses may use too much electricity and will not be eligible for the aggregated pricing, but that doesn't mean they can't contact companies like this on their own and lower their supply costs.

The reason it matters on how you get billed if the problem is inside your house if you choose a reseller as your provider for electricity is; If a consumer has a problem, Comed will show up and determine the problem is inside your house and then they will leave because the meter is your point of separation between regulated and deregulated billing. At that point you pay for Comed's dispatch, NOT the repair. Comed will then bill the reseller for the dispatch which the reseller will eventually pass on the bill the consumer and you still need to find someone to fix your inside wire, so now you have 2 bills for the same issue. This is all explained in the wonderfully corrupt Regulatory "De-Regulation" Utility Laws of Illinois.

ComEd has nothing to do with the wiring in your house. The energy generator has nothing to do with the wiring in your house. Never has, never will.

Under this aggregation, ComEd still sends and maintains the wires and infrastructure that delivers the electricity to your home. Yes, that stops at the meter. Same with the gas company. Same with the phone company.

On my bill, energy delivery charges are the second part of the bill.

The first part is the electricity generation part, which is the part that is changing. If you live in one of the 16 communities, and choose to not opt out, beginning in October you will begin paying the newly negotiated rate, which is lower than ComEd's old rate for electricity generation and 42% lower than the new rates ComEd has gotten the ICC to agree to.

If you want to opt out and pay the higher ComEd rate, or go with a different provider and pay a higher rate (I've looked into it, going it alone you won't find lower rates than what the aggregation group negotiated) you are free to do that. But I don't see why you would want to.

could you explain this more specifically? In other words is the firs energy company who we need to contact to get the lowest rates? Do we do nothing? What does a person need to do to get these negotiated rates? Thanks for the help.

You don't have to do anything at all. You will be switched automatically unless you chose to opt out. A opt out letter will be sent to you in the next few weeks. That's it.

Downers Grove has a very similar deal. There is nothing odd about it. By going as a group our towns got a better deal than those that went alone.

Your delivery company remains ComEd.

The company your town designated as its supplier is First Energy.

Every town / city / business / individual person... in IL is eligible to do this. A town can choose to go it alone or can band together with other towns to increase their kilowatt hours used. The more kwh used, the lower the $/kwh First Energy will offer.
