FROM THE ARTICLE:
Harkins said that it is estimated that over $500,000 in billable services are lost because private ambulance companies must be hired due to a lack of volunteer EMT staffing during weekday shifts.

“It is important to view this assessment not as a litany of failures, rather, as a series of recommendations to improve an already excellent department,” Harkins said.“Stratford has been well served for decades by our volunteer EMS force, and will continue to do so for many more thanks to the recommendations included in this review.”

Why don't they do a review/audit of the stratford PD? I guess everything is fine over there.

of all the services we have in town. The volunteer ambulance service is the crown jewel.

Started under the PD.

Moved under the FD.(who hate them)

They deserve their own building and autonomy.

I'm a taxpayer, not aligned or attached to the EMS.

But you want to talk about bang for your buck and good people. Many long time volunteers who have given countless hours to the town.

I say, give them what they need. Boost the volunteer numbers and let them continue to serve the town as they have for the last 30-35 years.

If you have no connection to EMS as yo claim in your comment, where do you get off stating the FD hates EMS? That is by all accounts untrue.

However there appears to be a power struggle initiated by a power monger
who resents the FD's arrival and help sometimes up to 25 minutes before EMS if at all..Now becoming a power issue rather than a matter of what is in the best interest of the person or persons in need...That is disgusting!

EMS volunteers have been mistreated by their "superiors", vehicles are beat, by all accounts.

Money has been lost to private companies due to several factors other than shortage of Volunteers..Perhaps having only 2 properly working vehicles have contributed to the necessity for the 28-30 minute wait for private ambulance's arrival?

Perhaps many volunteers are fed up,(some fired some left) with the piss poor treatment received by them from those who are paid and abuse their POWER??

The $500,000 lost could have paid for 2 more working vehicles...
Who and what is this town thinking with? It is not rocket science after all!

I appreciate the quick arrival of our FD and the efforts of the EMS...we need both. Power Trips and the runaround are what we do NOT need!

How do you "boost" the volunteer numbers when:
1- Functional vehicle numbers are down?
2-Moral down, disrespect prevails?
Get with the program...People do not need to be used & abused for NO PAY!

Phyllis has NO idea what she is talking about and if you are so sure phyllis why son't you just come and volunteer for a couple of shifts and see for yourself. Otherwise shut your ugly trap!

It is perfectly understandable. Misplaced, but understandable. I have personally watched Firefighters literally stand around impatiently waiting for an ambulance to respond to a 911 call. Both they and the patient were reduced to looking at the clock as the minutes ticked by until finally an AMR ambulance arrived.

It is not the fault of the EMT volunteers or Paramedics of EMS. Especially since the Fire Chief is supposed to be in command of both services.(Where ARE those new radios for the FD, by the way?)

Really the ugly trap is yours...jealous are those who arrive 30 minutes AFTER the FD has taken vitals, administered oxygen etc often saving lives during a time sensitive situation. If you cannot handle the truth..makes that "certain someone who is probably YOU right Donna, look bad

Let me reitererate...I respect, admire, appreciate and commend our volunteers..past & present. I have seen the poor treatment of EMT & EMS volunteers...operative word-VOLUNTEERS made by those paid to bully.
Those who feel POWER & CONTROL is more important than the reason for being...
Don't agree? Ask any former Volunteer, I did!

You hit the nail right on the head. The head honcho is the biggest problem. Prison guard is a more appropriate job description for the person you mention.

Phyllis,

I think you may have missed my point.

Stratford EMS has many fine folks who volunteer their time and are deserving of our gratitude.

I am not now and have never been attached to the EMS service in Stratford.

I have however observed the poor treatment of those volunteers by certain members of the FD.

Starting around the time when they began sharing medical responses.

A little clearer now? If you have been around either group you cannot deny that this has occurred. It is the old paid vs. volunteer argument. Its been going on for years.

Anyway my point was that I know many stratford EMS folks past and present and we all owe them our gratitude.

I would extend that to the FD and PD as well as they are deserving. Although this post is about the EMS .

phyllis.... so you are going to come down and volunteer?
great!
you are clueless....
the fire department NEVER responded to medical emergencies UNTIL they felt the wrath of previous councils and felt that they were going to close fire houses...
then, low and behold they found state statutes showing that they were first responders and now show up at all the fender benders.
hmmmmm how much does it cost to have those BIG RIGS coming and going all day 1000 miles per hour through barnum and main?
maybe they should have another smaller unit? One that would save on gas and damage?
like an ambulance?

Unfortunately, in almost all incidences the FD is there first. If you are a resident in need of emergency medical treatment you really don't care if it's an EMT in a FD uniform or from SEMS.

What we don't need are disputes between the FD and SEMS. We need better and more effective coverage.

Obviously this is beyond the talents of either Chief Cavanaugh or Donna Best.

so why not run the ambulance unit right out of the fire department then?
Have them come out in ONE unit rather then wasting taxpayer money by beating up then engines?

I guess it would sense to put them together in one building.... in none vehicle..... right?

Umm...and put our lives in the hands of Jim Cavanaugh and Curtis Maffet? Thanks anyway. They can't even clean up a broken mercury thermometer without calling the DEP. If it weren't for the three remaining assistant chiefs,I'd move.

We already have a hundred dedicated and talented volunteers willing and more than able to do the job. There skills are simply not the question.

They deserve effective and responsive leadership. And so do we.
