I hate to say it, but if you wait to see if Gates does shut down then you'll be competing with every one else that has lost their job. If gates closes its doors, depends if they offer grants to retrain, severance pay, unemployment benefits.If you retrain, train for something you can actually turn into a living. problem is there is just nothing else in this area to do. Also depends how you are fixed to move elswhere. But where would that be that is not effected by the slumping economy? One thing is sure, when or if Gates goes. This whole area will feel the impact. I used to work for Dixon. We had been hearing the same thing for some time before we actually got word that we were going to be closed down. It started with our older machinery being shipped to Mexico. Efficency experts were brought in to trim the fat. Then lines started closing and that machinery went. then the temps. were laid off. After that the formulas and procedures left for the trip south. Then whole shifts were laid off. The Core plant was the first to go then word came that the rest of the plant would close.
One thing is for sure. You had better have a plan B because I don't think we've seen the worst yet. Best of luck to all that still have a job.

I have heard more people are on the choppinp block for next month. They need to get rid of soooo many big wigs. We have to many factories heading to Mexico and China we need to keep this factory here. Good luck to the few employees left.

Gates closing down, I'm not sure who the people are that make up these rumors to scare people but this is just stupid. The facts are sure business has slowed down and Gates has had to lay some folks off. The facts are that Tomkins is still investing money for future growth at Gates-Versailles and there are no plans to move Gates anywhere. So stop these ridiculous rumors and do something productive with your time.

NeedtoKnow,

Is it true Tomkins is a foreign owned company? Do you have any lay off data? I'm pretty worried here...

Thank you for at least adressing these "rumors."

No Gates is just having a hard time just like every other place. But nothing has ever been said about gates closing. I was layed off and I had almost two years. But when things pick up I have faith that gates will bring people back. As far as temp. they cannot come back until full time are back to work. So please stop making up rumors about gates. Just wait and see what happens but I can promise no one knows but Kevin S or Jerry caps. When they say it will close then you can start to worry until then just keep your finger crossed. With out Gates Morgan County will stand still for a long time.

There are people higher than Jerry Capps and Kevin S. I would think the "higher-ups" would know before those two would!

Just a few more tidbits for the rumor mill. Last rumor out was that Gates is looking at closing one of its union plants in Ill. and moving the machinery and jobs to Versailles. They are already using the old Dixon plant for warehousing and storage. There is also some talk of moving the lines from Galesburg to Versailles also. Closing plants that have had the union wages at way over $30/hr will be a cost savings to the company even if the pay $20/hr here. Not every company is closing up and kicking out their employees. If you want to see more jobs retained in the US, write your senator and complain about the government passing laws that make it profitable for industries to move to Mexico and other countries. It is your life that they are impacting. Make a fuss!!!! We have to retain what jobs we do have.

Buy local as much as possible or least from the USA. If our economy does not pickup and people continue to let the government run over us this will be the USSA before long.

No "problems" with China.....just a lot of debt! And how can you not blame Bush when he was the one that was in office when we borrowed it?

Hey...I never borrowed any money from China.

I thought China was buying US debt like others countries in the form of T bills. Isn't that a form of investment? Is it possible that other countries do this to keep the US from creating higher import tax? Did a president actually go to China and ask them for a loan? Or did China come to the US and willing buy T bills? Who profits the most from this?

Seriously, all that Pell Grant money has to be comming from somewhere ;>}
