Cranberry Fest expected to be 'a blast'
For Maria Krueger, Warrens Cranberry Fest is synonymous with fun and tradition. Krueger, 42, Kellner, and other central Wisconsin residents are anticipating good times, food and bargains when they attend the 37th annual event, which begins Friday.

I, too, looked ahead to the Cranberry Festival with much anticipation. Long a lover of all things cranberry, we stumbled across Warrens as a side trip while taking the "Great River Road" drive last summer. So, after a visit to the Cranberry Discovery Center, we decided to return to WI in the fall for the Cranberry Festival. I was much disappointed to find that I would not witness the cranberry harvest. It seems that the festival is such a boon to local revenue that everyone remotely associated with cranberries participates in some manner at the festival-thus no harvesting until it is over. So to my great sadness, as I was winging my way home to Texas, the harvesting was only just beginning. Maybe next time I will skip the outrageous crowds (rain, too this year) and go a week later to see the harvest. I did enjoy a great festival and pick-your-own apples over in Gays Mills, saw many wonderful produce markets (Pecks is terrific) so my trip wasn't a total waste.
