I was told they were released in 3-5 places thruout Califonria. I know I saw a herd on the way to Clear Lake... and on the way to Oregon.

the elk you see on the way to clear lake are tules, on the way to oregon you are probably seeing roosevelts, they live in NW california, in NE California we have Rocky Mountain Elk but there are not a lot of those and they are in pretty remote areas

We saw a huge convergence of elk in the mud flats of Lake Pillsbury about 1 1/2 yrs ago. Four herds bugling and coming from all different sides. It was so cool, I got some video, but it's terrible quality from my cheapo camera.

I'm glad they are making a comeback, good work folks!!

"Hoffman said as long as [hunting] doesn't hurt the population, there is no reason not to allow hunting."

I'm not sure Mr. Hoffman knows what hunting is. Murdering some rare elk for sport seems like it would certainly hurt the population.

A very wonderful story. Congratulations. It is good to see something of the local history and something besides, war, crime, budget, and violence on the front page everyday. Great work ER.

Hunting culls the herds so their aren't too many males fighting and not allowing the females to not be harrassed and allow the healthy births to survive.

Barbara Arrigoni is to be commended for this great story, and fine photos also. Glenn County is usually relegated to the back pages as the city of Chico stories dominate the front page but it looks like we have something no one else does. Tule Elk. Thank you ER for doing something very special. Perhaps some of our school teachers will see this and inform our children of what a valuable wildlife resource we have. They also need to understand the conflict with our cattle ranchers and how through proper habitat and herd management livestock and beef cattle and sheep can coexist.
