Doctors lie about the number of times they have performed a a certain procedure. Look for fellowship training related to the surgery you need ( sports/ shoulder/ joint replacemement ) and speak to a few physical therapists who see the work of some of these surgeons. The list published in Newsday for Orthopedics may not be the best resource.

Where are the "Questions to Ask" ?
Based on the title of this article, I expected questions to ask my orthopedist, not a list of physicians in Castle Connelly!

I've had knee surgrey twice, 2007 and 2008. The first surgeon screwed me up, I was worse after surgery and suffered endless for 1 year before I was able to find another surgeon to take over my care. Trust me, it wasn't easy finding one to take my case. EVERYONE - before you have surgery insure the surgeon specializes in that area, get a second opinion. NOt all the tiem is surgery necessary, sometimes P. Therapy is all you need. Don't jump into surgery just because the surgeon says you need it.

I was very happy with the surgery Dr Victor Gold did on my knee. He's in West Islip.

Some questions I would ask are:

How often and how many of these procedures have you done?
Are you board certified?
What is the average recovery time before I will be close to 100%?
How much pain should I expect and for how long?
What are my anesthesia options?
Will I need a special brace/cast/etc.. and for how long?

Good luck!
