Not a Sour Grape

New York, NY

A lot of people go out of their way to complain about a facility, but it is rare for someone to go out of their way to compliment it. All these people that have posted negative reviews were correct at some point in time, but are also sensitive, spoiled, sour grapes. These people encompasses a miniscule fraction of customers, meanwhile there are hundreds that are satisfied customers. The facility at one time did have a leaky roof, but it has since been fixed. The air inside is not hot, in fact, the air is well circulated and is cool, but at the same time not entirely throat-irritatingly dry. The machines are clean and the weights (both free and machine) are rarely crowded. The cancellation policy is explained clearly (20 days notice, or you will be billed). The customer service is great; both responsive and friendly. Buck up and stop being sour grapes. (P.S. I don't work there, and for all you skeptics, shove off.)

My wife just signed up and asked about a family membership price. She was told they have no such price plan. I just hope it's not as bad as everyone is making it sound

I just joined LA Fitness today, everyone was nice helpful, and O'Neil gave me a sample workout and I was dying afterwards. Barbara was not nasty, she was pleasant and helpful. I think they may have ironed some issues out. Everything was clean and no smells at all when I walked through. Seems like a fun upbeat place to workout. Hopefully I will not be disappointed!

Reading some of the comments are disturbing. I have been a member since the LA Fitness in Lake Grove opened and I've had mixed feelings about the entire experience. It's a big gym with new equipment which is great, the location for me is good as well. The juice bar is pretty good too but there are a couple of girls working there that seem to always have an attitude. My wife and I have been paying $49 each and was not offered a multi person membership but I will inquire about it the next time I go. I will make sure I don't speak to Barbara. They also changed my billing date which was f***ed up cause it cause a check to bounce. When I spoke to customer service to address the issue it was a nightmare. The first two people I spoke to hung up on me, the third person was very short and acted like I was bothering her. No apology for the inconvienience, no explaination for the change, no warning about the change, and when I asked them to change the billing date they told me there was a fee. I said f*** it and left it the way it is.

I found out LA Fitness in Lake Grove employs ex-cons. I have since stopped going there. I am not interested in a refund of my dues.

I don't think it is right without telling the members.

I'm sorry to say but you will be disappointed. I read elsewhere here that LA Fitness hires felons who have served time in prison. If they are working in the back office or after hours where they do not interact with members, I sort of not mind. But if they are out on the floor, then I have an issue with that.

Our family works out at the Lake Grove La Fitness. My husband is a Suffolk police and should be able to get a criminal background check on the employees as long as he is able to obtain their names.

I have no complaints about LA Fitness other than he heat! The gym is way too hot and everyone complains yet nothing is done to remedy the situation!

As far as the locker rooms go I have seen people shaving their heads at the sink I mean give me a break dude have some respect! Also not crazy about one of the trainers that I have seen talking about members.

I went to LA fitness for a long time. i started out at the one in New Hyde Park then when we moved out east went to the one in lake Grove. We payed the $49 each which i believe is their going rate. I never felt life anyone every gave me an attitude and I always had a good time there. I would say it was hot in there, but it is warmer then I would have liked it to be. Both gyms were lik that. It may just be that hard to cool off a building of that size. I never felt like it was so bad i couldnt work out though. The bathrooms were cleaner at the one in New Hyde park, but i have seen some nasty gym bathrooms and this doesnt even compare. The locker room is nice. I took some spin classes there and some to the teachers are great! Overall i didnt have a bad experience. The only reason i left was because i got a job at another gym in which I recieved a gym membership!:) I had no problems with them stopping my account. The women Barabara you were talking about was hot and cold. I saw her happy one day and the next yelling at an employee, but who knows what her situation is. The x con thing is interesting. I am going to look into it. I know some people that still go there. If so, do we know what they did? I mean as long as wallets and bag dont start missing, i dont see what the big deal is. Who knows if this is even true, and if it is this person might have done something stupid when they were young like deal drugs or steal a car, that doesnt mean they can;t change. i never had anyone bother me though.i loooooove the juice bar too! I agreed with the classes though, i love classe and I was not impressed except for some spin classes. i remember the leak in the roof. There was one in the spin room and one in the main room. I know they fixed it though. I may go take another look one day just to see if some of these statments are true and get the story staight!

i worked the front desk of an LA Fitness i PA while i was in college. i can honestly say it varies from club to club the exprience you'll get. however, the sales guys.. are sharks. and once you sign up they will want nothing to do with you, unless your a pretty girl. there is no SET rate. everyone pays a different rate and don't let them fool you. they can offer you quite a different variety... from low initiation to high to no initiation. and the monthly payments do vary from 25-45. but obviously they won't make good commission off a low sign up. they are trained to be pushy and psychotic.
as for the credit card issue. you won't be permitted to join without putting a CC on file. we bill month by month... like any gym, tanning salon, or any month by month membership. you have the option of paying in full, which is paying a year or two in advance if that is really such an issue. and yes, we will call you if your CC declines. it's the front desk's main job. and yes we got commission from it.
as for cancelling.. we cannot do it. coperate does in fact have to do it. so you need to mail out the form we give you, and once they recieve it, it will be cancelled.. but that is explained in the agreement you signed.
i left la fitness due to seeing trainers (who werent certified) and sales guys using juice to get big. after all the harassment from the sales guy. and dealing with all the complaints and sob stories from members after being ripped off or treated wrong by a sales counselor.
i wouldn't recommend la.
but... it does vary from club to club.

I've read these reviews and I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I am a forty something woman who works out three to five times a week. I left a local gym that I had been a member at for 15 years to join LAF. I like the cleanliness of LAF, although you'd be surprised that some of the women just cannot clean up after themselves. I like the fact that there are tons of machines, ellipticals, treadmills and stair masters. I missed my initial PT complimentary session and O'neill fished me out a few months later and gave me a session and lots of pointers. I am quite tough when it comes to sales pitches and since I was already a member of a local gym, I played hardball, refused to pay initiation fees and got a good deal. The weight area seems well equipped and I don't feel intimidated when I need to use the weights. I am happy with my decision to go to LAF, even though I am paying 3x more than Ballys.

I bought a membership there, and will attest what others are saying: the place SUCKS! don't waste your money. The hot tub there is disgusting too, hair and white stuff floating in it for days on end. The management only cares about getting their money.

I joined the gym in the summer of 2010. This is by far the best gym I have ever been to. And all the people that are saying there is no discount for family is completely wrong. When I went to join with a friend the guy offered to us the family plan. He went out of his way to offer us a discount. As for the equipment it is all up to date and always clean. I never really go in the locker room but the few times I was in there I never seen a mess. The best thing about the gym is that it is never over crowded because there is plenty of machines and there is plenty of equipment. Don't listen to what these people say. I guess there was some things that needed to be worked out when it opened but I am telling you that it is totally different now and I would recommend this place to anyone.
