Dean of only state-run law school against adding more in NY

“We need a completely new building”

With nearly 150,000 lawyers living and working in the state, a strong case could be made that the legal profession is well represented in New York. via Newsday.com

Surprise, surprise. If we follow the dean's argument, Buffalo Law School should be closed down because there are just too many law schools in New York.

There is a huge glut of JD's in the last several years. I know many people that have $150K of debt (yes, you heard correctly) and are working in Starbucks.

The law degree that Scott Bullock gained in 2005 from Seton Hall University -- where he says he ranked in the top third of his class -- is a "waste," he says. Some former high-school friends are earning considerably more as plumbers and electricians.

The argument for a state-supported law school is simple, as far as I understand it (and as I have heard expressed by Binghamton): By charging lower tuition rates, more students will choose public law. The fact that there are many law students who are deep in debt, and cannot make ends meet, supports the argument that there is a need for a public law school whose mission, in part, is to encourage its graduates to practice public law and/or go into public service. Such a mission is difficult to sustain when the average student has to incur upwards of a $100,000 debt.
