As planes waited to take off from Kennedy Airport, the jargon-packed radio chatter between controllers and pilots was interrupted by a young boy's voice: "JetBlue 171, cleared for takeoff." An air traffic controller who brought his son to work let the youngster read a few routine messages to pilots in an incident that amused pilots but not the ...

The "air traffic controller" was controlling ground traffic, not air traffic. Go find some REAL news.

There got off light they should have been fired. Children have no place in the control room or on the microphone communicating with jets in motion.

Lets find something else to over re-act over. My God, the world has come to this??? A harmless couple of transmissions while the planes were still on the ground by a couple of kids proud of what their parents do for a living and are taking an interest in there parents lives?

Ya, I know, unheard of these days...and thats a damn shame.

This is just sad.

Yes it is okay to bring your child to work when it does not impose a risk on the public. My husband is a surgeon at two of the three area hospitals and I wonder if his patients would like our children in the OR when he is doing surgery? They have begged us multiple times throughout the years! I think not, as harmless at it seems there are some jobs where kids or unauthorized people should be banned.
Maybe I am being harsh but I think there should be zero tolerance for this type of behavior.

Seriously... are we overreacting?? They were being supervised. Dad was telling them what to do. If you listen to the tapes, they gave instructions on "clear for takeoff" and "contact departure" not stuff like "turn left heading... blah blah blah" No lives were at risk.

Which one of us has not taken their kid to work and had them enter stuff into a computer or do some mundane (yes, in ATC parlance.. the instructions WERE mundane) thing under our supervision.

@Port Jeff: I don't see how some patients wouldn't mind your kids in the OR while Dad was operating as long as they didn't operate on me. If Dad wanted a scapel and they said "Scapel Stat" after Dad instructed them to and while he was watching... no problem. Let them visit and get a new found appreciation of what Dad does. As it stands, we as parents are spending less time with our kids than our parents did.

I remember as a kid sitting in a cockpit or two while the jet was in the air and even holding the joystick under the watchful eye of the Captain. We all landed safely....

Sorry but your comparisons are not even in the same galaxy. Saying a few harmless words over a mic to a couple of on the ground, non-moving pilots vs. handing a child a knife to cut a person open, pinch off an artery/vein, hold a clamp so the rib cage stays open...yeah, thats a tad different. Not all job functions are the same and not all are matters of life/death.
